Comparing sales signals where most of the fans are. Metal Gear Solid 1 sold Playstations Metal Gear Solid II "was" exclusive on Sony, where the fans are.

Konomi, and Hideo were rewarded greatly by the very Playstation gamers who made them even richer. The landslide is on the PS2. 7 million sales to 1. XboX DID NOT, have more Metal Gear Fans.

Raiden should've been an optional character, though he played exactly the same as Snake.

At the time there was no patching games online so a better version of MGS2 was released on Xbox, and the biggest fans never played it.

Other than this, I don't care about your meaningless denials. No one liked Raiden while the iron was hot. You do cause you're not an OG Metal Gear player from the 80's. You probably don't remember the world without the internet when the PS1 took off. Damn. I was a teenager.

Guy I'm getting bored now.

Sales show where the larger player base was, not that every person who bought the game was a “real fan” or that every fan disliked Raiden. A PS2 sales advantage does not tell us the opinions of millions of individual players.

The claim also was never that there was no backlash. The point is that backlash from some fans does not prove Raiden was universally disliked, nor does it prove your interpretation of what should have happened with the character.

Saying I am not an “OG” player does not address the argument. Someone’s age or when they started playing Metal Gear does not determine whether their analysis is valid. A newer player can understand the game, and an older player can still have a subjective reaction.

Your personal disappointment with Raiden is clear. The part that does not follow is turning that disappointment into claims about all fans, sales meaning, or who is allowed to have an opinion.

PS2 = 7 million sales

XboX = 1 million and change sales

It's not possible for Xbox to even have a bigger MGS2 fanbase, no matter how many you'd label true or untrue fans. Hell. Maybe half a million are people that owned MGSII on PlayStation, that's not a good thing. The only good reason to get it is to play as Snake.

Anyone with half a brain would know this math. It's grade 2 level.

Of course it does. You weren't even aware. This stuff probably happened before you were born. Me ? I was there.

I know your argument. I say no one likes Raiden. You say, well some people do. Well duh, that's painfully obvious.

Let's see here....Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. This is Raiden's game.

I see it came out in 2013.... It did poorly.... 2 million units sold across XboX and PlayStation.

The game was revived by internet memes in 2021 and went on to sell a combined 6 million units.

It's nice how Konomi was able to get the kids to buy their old unsuccessful game, and happy you are.

Yes the game died and it gained popularity from people making fun of it with memes, triggering another 4 million sales EIGHT YEARS after.

I'm talking about real Metal Gear tho. Not some hack and slash spinoff using the name.

When asked, I'd say Raiden's fanbase are cattle. It became a trend to make fun of the game, Oh hey, lets get it ! lol okay. Real Metal Gear titles still slap harder in sales.

Uh Correction. That is Raiden's 2nd game. Metal Gear Solid II being the first.

I know your argument. I say no one likes Raiden. You say, well some people do. Well duh, that's painfully obvious. Let's see here... Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. This is Raiden's second game. I see it came out in 2013... It did poorly... 2 million units sold across XboX and PlayStation. The game was revived by internet memes in 2021 and went on to sell a combined 6 million units. It's nice how Konomi was able to get the kids to buy their old unsuccessful game, and happy you are. The sales numbers do not prove what you are using them to prove. PS2 selling more copies than Xbox does not show that PS2 owners were the “real fans” or that Xbox owners were less invested. It only shows that the PS2 had a much larger audience and was the original platform for the release. Sales numbers measure purchases, not the opinions or legitimacy of the people who bought it.

You also say “no matter who you would call true or untrue fans,” but that distinction is exactly what you keep introducing. You dismiss Metal Gear Rising as not “real Metal Gear,” describe people who like Raiden as trend followers, and imply that certain fans have more legitimacy than others.

A spin-off being different from the mainline games does not make the people who enjoy it less valid fans. It only means they enjoy a different part of the series. Someone can prefer the stealth games, someone else can prefer the action-oriented games, and both can still be fans.

The same applies to Raiden. “Many fans disliked the protagonist switch” and “nobody liked Raiden” are completely different claims. The first is supported by the historical backlash. The second is disproven by the existence of people who liked the character. The issue is not that you disliked Raiden. The issue is turning your personal preference into a test of who counts as a legitimate fan, then criticizing others for supposedly doing the same thing.

Dude one more time...

- PS2 - 7 million copies sold

- Xbox -1 million copies sold

Where are the majority of fans Dragoon ?..... What's that ? The 1 million units sold on Xbox ? Really ?

There's nothing more to prove, other than how hard headed, closed minded and mathematically dismissive you are.

What it showcases it the magnitude of fans and it is night and day. By your logic Metal Gear fans were by large, potentially the last to buy it, this isn't the case, and freakin no one was waiting for it to release on Xbox. Xbox itself was still new and never had any PlayStation exclusives ported over.

You're dismissing the fact MGSII was "anticipated"..... On the PlayStation II.

I'm seeing here we ( not you but I ) waited 18 months for this game after it was unveiled at E3 2000. A whole year and a half.... This game was a damn good reason to buy a PS2 in those days. At the time MGSII was the most anticipated game in human history.

"Yes, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is widely considered the most anticipated video game in history up to the time of its release in November 2001.Following the massive critical and commercial success of the original Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation, the hype for the sequel reached an unprecedented, near-mythical status."

"The game’s debut at E3 2000 is still considered by many critics to be the greatest game trailer ever made. Hideo Kojima showcased nine minutes of cinematic footage running entirely in real-time on the PlayStation 2. Journalists at the event reported that it stirred a greater emotional response than any movie trailer they had ever witnessed, even outshining the hype for Star Wars: Episode I"

True. 9 minutes of gameplay footage. 9 minutes... That trailer had replay value. I'd recognize that trailer blindfolded with just the audio,

What holds true......the majority of Metal Gear fans, got the lesser version and a minority got the better version.

You also say “no matter who you would call true or untrue fans,” but that distinction is exactly what you keep introducing. You dismiss Metal Gear Rising as not “real Metal Gear,” describe people who like Raiden as trend followers, and imply that certain fans have more legitimacy than others.

It flopped in the first place cause it was Raiden. After 8 years it sold up to 6 million units cause of internet memes.

No it isn't real Metal Gear, it's a hack and slash with a skin and branding to push sales.

Snake doesn't need memes. He outshines Raiden and sells the games for being Snake. I don't play Smash Bros but I recall Snake being a guest in that game. Was Raiden ? Don't even know, probably not.

A spin-off being different from the mainline games does not make the people who enjoy it less valid fans. It only means they enjoy a different part of the series. Someone can prefer the stealth games, someone else can prefer the action-oriented games, and both can still be fans.

"The game completely abandons the traditional slow, methodical stealth gameplay of the main series, leaning entirely into over-the-top, high-octane action."

It's nothing more than a hack and slash. The models and characters could've been skinned to be anything and anyone. It's branded as Metal Gear. It's also the least sold of the branding, cause it isn't about the suspenseful stealth mechanics

"the issue" Sounds like you're whining again, and over something so insignificant.

There is no issue. Arguing this is retarded, but yes, NO ONE liked Raiden, and I did mention while the iron was hot.

Of course people like Raiden, and it's obviously figurative to say no one liked him and in Metal Gear land. No. He's not very popular. They can kill off Raiden no one will be sad. Well. There's you who probably never bought the MGRR in 2013, but got it later when it became trendy and other people are buying it.

Fun fact. Raiden would whine a lot. Snake on the other hand, he's the tuff guy everyone wanted to play as.

Sales numbers show where copies were sold. They do not show what every fan thought about Raiden or who counts as a legitimate fan. You accuse me of creating “real fan” standards, but you are the one doing that by dismissing Metal Gear Rising as “not real Metal Gear,” calling Raiden fans “cattle,” and treating later fans as less valid. Those are your standards. You also selectively decide what evidence counts. Early sales support your argument, but later sales and renewed interest are dismissed as “just memes” or irrelevant. If sales are your metric, later sales count too.

I did not focus on the anticipation because it does not prove your conclusion. A highly anticipated game can still have mixed reactions. Some fans disliked Raiden, some were fine with him, and some preferred him. Surprise does not automatically mean rejection. You also assume why I played Metal Gear Rising without evidence. I wanted to play a Metal Gear game on PC and preferred a more modern entry. That has nothing to do with trends or memes.

The argument was never that Raiden had no backlash. It is that “some fans disliked Raiden” is different from “nobody liked Raiden.” Those are not the same claim.

I never played much MGS but Raiden is iconic and not including him would have been a mistake imo.

If I get a better gpu I'll probably go back to Skyrim.

I played Skyrim on legendary difficulty. I leveled up to 70, but then I downloaded a pirated program from a torrent and infected my Windows with viruses. I reinstalled Windows but forgot to save the save files for the game. Starting over was hard, and I was also disappointed with the dragon battles. The dragons in Skyrim are really dumb.
