A phd in mathematics but I also want to have some relevance in Physics at some point or at least know my shit at a high level and be able to theorize for fun in my spare time. Advice?  

I've no experience in PhDs in mathematics. One idea would be to go with theoretical physics PhD if you want both. You get the math and the physics. A potential downside is that you're limited to what is 'useful'. I.e., nature gives you the model to work with, instead of your imagination. If you view math as purely an art with no end goal, you won't like it. If you're better motivated by seeing how math can be used to understand reality, then I'd recommend it.

 The problem is I kind of have my phd thesis topic already and its definitely pure math. 

But I don't just view math as an art, instead it's a kind of epistemological foundation and that foundation serves our further understanding of the Physical reality as well as other aspects of reality. My issue is that i am interested in it all.
