I've been changing my self talk and it's making me feel great.

"Ok Jim, Pick yourself up, I love you ok? You're a capable guy and you'll overcome this, you'll finish the project because you're smart and I believe in you"

I don't know why but it works amazing. Talking to yourself in a motherly compassionate and supportive way works great.

Its pretty great when I fuck something up and get frustrated it's just like stepping outside of yourself and guiding you to calm down.

Not just in certain situations where strong emotions occur, you can also do it at your start of the day and pep talk myself up. I sound slightly demented but it has me feeling slightly more happy in the morning

How does someone just control their inner dialogue? 

Create it. Talk to yourself. Fight the negative voice. I roast my negative voice till what it says seems invalid.
