However, to us they're not commodity fetish objects like they are in the US.
i've seen you mention this a few times in different posts. i think its somewhat short sighted to assume you really know how all the 100 million gun owning Americans feel about their guns. just sayin.

Have you ever had to escape a burning house that was lit up by an arsonist who has half a clue what he's doing?

You don't have time to go for a gun or anything else.

You have to get to the nearest exit as fast as possible and get the fuck out.

And that's all your mind is able to process while chunks of burning ceiling are falling down around your head.

Also, I hear well stocked armories will go off like popcorn when you set fire to them.

right, i acknowledge this as an issue. but my point is that other people had time to react. other people heard shots and then saw the fires.

"The new ban would probably not have stopped Wortman from obtaining his weapons: he did not have a license to possess or purchase firearms, and police have said they believe the guns were obtained illegally in Canada and the United States."

Obvious Political Policy "Never let a tragedy go to waste to push forward your political agenda".

Its more like i'm saddened by the ignorance and the heavy handedness of Canada's North Korean style leftist government. All of a sudden "they" know what is best for the people of Canada without a vote of the people. Its basic totalitarianism. One day, with the wave of a hand, your rights to protect yourself from a brain dead leftist globalist tyrannical government are stripped away. These people will destroy Canada's great culture. and there is no doubt, culture change is what they are after.

This new law only affects lawful citizens of Canada. It will do nothing to stop crime. In fact, it will create a black market for guns. Criminals will continue to get their guns illegally, just as they always have.

This new law is a political virtue signalling effort by the left to show "they are doing something". While the leftist sheeple raise their hands in victory about nothing.

Do the people of Canada really think they can stop a psychopath from getting guns and killing people with them? Don't you see? This is about control, not crime.

There's something really amusing to me about that he had police attire on. I'm imagining seeing a cop randomly wig out and starting to blast people.

I find this type of response funny because it's Canada but it is unfortunate to see as it does not address the fundamental problem.

If it was the U.S. then I would indeed be pissed that I'd now be forced to break the law in order to hold on to fundamental liberties despite being a very responsible gun owner who has put a lot of effort into following the law.

I see that the gun ban is a direct reactionary measure to the shooting, and yes it feels a little disingenuous because of it. But still, maybe Canada could actually handle a ban on Assault weapons, provided they don't declare "victory over gun violence" with just that. They already manage to have far less shootings per capita due to their strict regulations.

Do the people of Canada really think they can stop a psychopath from getting guns and killing people with them?

Not with that attitude they don't!

Don't you see? This is about control, not crime.

Isn't all effort to stop crime ultimately about control though

Yes it's more about the idea, I'm sure you care for your Canadian neighbours' freedom too, if even on a principal level. Sadly though the nature of a society requires one to make sacrifices for the greater good. I'm sure you as a law abiding citizen don't drink & drive but that doesn't mean you shouldn't pull over and blow into the thingy each time the cops want you to.

If this were true Sweden should have less shootings not more. guns != crime. gun crime is directly related to drugs and gangs not the number of guns available. correlation does not mean causation.
