"There is plenty wrong with the US."
You don't need to tell us. We're aware.
"The common American is not to be credited for the US status in the diplomatic world. The common American can't use proper English right. The common American is the one thinking he is high and mighty, more commonly than the Europeans."
As someone of dual citizenship who's been to 37 countries so far, I can easily say that the more I travel, the more I see this as complete and utter hypocrisy. I would say about half the people in this country think it's totally fucked. We grow up thinking Europe is some higher standard of civilization. It's not. Many of the Europeans I've known fall victim to the notion that they are superior, based on what is actually very little knowledge about he US. You're all just as media-brainwashed as we are, if not more.
I hear Europeans gripe and complain about how Americans trust their government far too much, then when questioned about their own, say something like "Well my government doesn't lie to it's people like yours.". I hear them criticize Americas supposed nationalism, then talk about how their country is so superior to others. I hear them make wild leaps of stereotype about us, and when pressed admit that they've never even been here. If an American presumed to make such assumptions about another culture, when they'd never been to that country and actually knew very little about it beyond media hype, they'd be descended upon by people calling them ignorant American bigots. Europeans and Asians alike love throwing shit at the American school system. My sister and quite a few friends have been teachers and students in both systems, and from their accounts and my personal experiences, I gotta say none of you are in any position to be doing so. People love to say that Americans aren't aware of other countries and don't keep up with world news. I can honestly say that among everyone I've known, the ratios of Americans vs other nationalities that are culturally ignorant and don't follow world events is alarmingly stacked in the other direction.
To all the non-Americans, when you travel in the US, do you frequently get people asking ridiculous questions like "You're Irish, aren't you an alcoholic?" or "You're Chinese, are you sure you should be driving?" or "You're Australian, do you have a pet kangaroo?"? Because I do. And yes, it is that level of absurdity and when I travel I have these sorts of questions (or flat out statements) posed to me almost every day. If I had a nickle for every time I got the question "You're American, why aren't you fat?"..... Yet we are the unenlightened ones? The lower form of civilization? You have given NOTHING that proves your superiority. You want me to be ashamed of being American? Then show me something other than "You Americans this, you Americans that...". Take a good long look at yourselves and show me some hard evidence that your country and your culture is better than ours. I would love to see you try.
"You have a short history compared to the other continents. You've had war, but all human history is one of wars and battles. You think countries in other places were formed without bloodshed and weapons? Show me one without a bloody history. There are countries where their governments really fucked the people up in dictatorships. I'd get it more if they had a gun cult over there."
Our short history is why this is more relevant. The foundation of this country is still quite close to us, historically, and is an intrinsic part of this countries identity. What Syst says about our history playing a role in our drive for security and mistrust of the government makes perfect sense.
