In a show I watch one of the most touching episodes is the episode of the starwhale. It is about a hard decision... 

A starwhale once came to earth to save as many people as it could from a dying planet. It got captured by the human beings to push their journey on to find a new planet. It endures constant pain through electric shocks to push the vessel forward. 

The choice is... Set it free and let everyone aboard die or keep it captive. In the clip the doctor wants to turn the starwhale into a vegetable. It would render the alien unable to feel pain tough still carry the people throughout space on their journey. 

In the end... It is set free. It is set free from the torture and the agony. It does not leave the people behind or let everyone die. It continues the journey. It came to earth because of the crying children. It stayed because of the crying children. It never needed to be tortured or tamed. It just wanted to mend the hearts of the broken young.

The vegetable plan's the best one honestly. No suffering from their organic space engine, and they'd possess the means to feasibly make more. 

We also have no idea what starwhales are capable of. Letting it go free could have it alert other starwhales of our treachery, giving them reason to kill us all, or perhaps it could do it by itself like some sort of space god.

That is not its nature, would be my guess....and because it understood the cries...it wanted to help...because they owned the cruelty of their actions and it understood the will to live.....and freed it...it stayed to help...Life is precious...

Well I forgot to mention it was the last of its kind. It came when it heard the cries of the children. It is a jump to assume it would stay after the abuse. It did end up staying for the children.  

It was the last of its kind... It kinda makes a being rethink life... so life is precious. 

What if you were the last of your kind and you found children extraterrestrials crying ?? What if they would all die without you ? What if their kind will be extinct ?
