Religion gives people a purpose higher them themselves and others. Which in turn makes everyone else and theirs, lives matter less then their purpose. And when this purpose is meaningless, like an imaginary man in the sky, then they kill(or occasionally help) for nothing.

Trouble occurs when the purpose of religion is not an abstract construct but man itself - the purpose is not a 'higher', abstract one anymore. Then it becomes the idolatry of the lowest common denominator.

Heard about that last week. Was talking with a couple people here about it. They can't believe it either. Nor can they believe that it is now Law that ALL universities must build in EVERY building a "prayer' room for the next to non existent Muslim population here. The law came into effect last year. No one knew. They were blown away by it. Fortunately, one person immediately asked ' What? Why is there not a chapel and temple also ?" You can imagine, I am rather busy on this. People don't know, as it occurs without fanfare nor a public vote. It is not the same as 'stupid'. Here, they are horrified by what they see happening elsewhere.

Why Islam is different from what, Christianity?
There was a time people waged wars, put on trial, tortured and killed people under the flag of Christianity, based on Christian teachings. They considered "pagans" vile, lesser men and took it as a mission to convert them even if it meant killing many of them. No other "religion" was used to kill more people than Christianity.
Do you believe Christianity was "different" centuries ago from what it is now, or are society and the people's interpretation of it different? Do the "differences" lie with religions or what the people turn them into?
The Earth is large and geographic isolation for millennia made it that not all societies are at the same stage of evolution, understanding, respect of life, hence the sharia thing. Instead of isolating and persecuting those with more backwards views, helping them develop and prosper by introducing them to new models and ways of life in a peaceful manner, is the best and most efficient way to cope with this clash and mess. Building walls only perpetrates the friction and deepens the differences, it's not a real solution.
Bonus q:
What do you think of those rich kids whose only merit is being born in a rich family, believe they are entitled to everything mommy and daddy gave them and despise, bully and look down onto the more unfortunate poorer kids?
