There are plenty of gay-haters who aren't religious. There are plenty of religious people who don't go out shooting gays. It's not the religion, it's the fabric of the person it works on.
The guy had serious mental and emotional issues. They are to blame for his action. Other rampage killers have similar issues but other ideologies for motivation. They don't have any holy book, they have manifestos and other shit. Breivik is still above this guy with 75 killings and 319 injured.
