Are human beings just thinking macines?

Someone recently told me that the human brain is akin to a computer. When you are born there is no data but as life happens the brain begins gathering and processing the data needed to survive in this world.

So then what is the ability to think? Are human brains are just complex computing machines? Or, is there more to the mind? Is the mind more than a computer or any other machine that we know of? What about emotions, how do they fit in?

Interesting idea. Emotions speed up the processing of data. Computers are based on logical sequencing though whereas emotions are, at the very least, highly variable - perhaps like viruses? What would humanity be like with the absence of emotions? Are emotions necessary at all?

I wouldn't want a world with no emotions. That would be like a world without senses. No colour, taste, or smell. No warm skin to press up against. What would intoxicated us? What would motivate us to connect outside ourselves? We'd have to be programmed if we came without desire.
