Somebody needs to learn how to gift :P
""Sacrifice of this magnitude is ennobling bc it frees others from suffering. Suicide, on the other hand, is an act of weakness."
Does that really matter?"
Maybe not to somebody who "just wants to watch the world burn" as it were. People like that are way outnumbered by those of us who want decent communities and support when we really need it.
Pampered assholes who go around crying wolf when they're not really in danger wreck it for the rest of us.
"To some, they see the suicide as "freeing others from suffering", an expression of self-loathing."
Um... yeah. That's what I said. I respect somebody who can make that decision and just get on with it.
""Robin Williams' death would be one example."
Howso, from him succeeding?"
I missed this question earlier. I'm assuming more than I probably should about RW, here.
I'm a fan. A lifelong, awe struck fan of his work as an actor and possibly a recipient of his charity. If I did benefit from his charity work I will always be grateful. If I'm not I still admire what he did for others like me. I lost my shit when he died. Really. I'm tearing up a little now, while I'm writing about him.
I got the impression from all of this that he loved his life and everything he did. Everything he touched turned to magic for us, his fans. So for somebody like me his suicide made absolutely no sense.
At least until I found out he was sick. That made sense. For such a gentle and charitable person to kill himself rather than leave his family or his fans with the burden of caring for him while he got sicker and sicker.
Remember Freddy Mercury? That was a tragic waste of talent. Not that I'm in any position to judge him. Just remembering how awful it was to watch him die. It must have been horrific for his family.
So yeah, for Robin I still believe that he made a noble sacrifice. Death of a Salesman in the face of the ills of the everyman, you know?
Who really knows, tho? None of us were there. He didn't tell anybody what he was planning. :P
"
"Taunting one's loved ones with idle death threats is disgusting."
That's all it can be if they lack the means of succeeding?"
Nobody in a first world country lacks the means to die. Even as a quadraplegic, I could kill myself if I wanted to.
I had a suicide pact once with a terminally ill friend, btw. He was dead serious and so was I. I'm glad he relieved me of the burden and changed his mind.
Again, where there's a will there's a way.
"Did you read how they were doing it, and details about Sin's life in general?"
Yes. It would appear that they are trying to help.
"There's no reasons presented here, just the presentation of oppressive obligations in the form of baseless judgement calls."
Srsly? The reasons are not presented in those 3 sentences. The reasons are presented elsewhere in my post. Read a little more carefully, this time. I'll rephrase it for you.
I said: Sin's treatment is expensive enough. Her parents are too busy working to pay for her care. They don't have time for this crap.
Again: She should get a life or stfu and die already.
"Just for clarity, are you saying that you believe that depression is always 100% curable through one's own efforts..."
No. I'm saying that I don't believe that Sin is depressed or that she's telling the truth about wanting to self harm/die.
Her attitude toward prostituting herself speaks volumes. Somebody who is depressed and broken would not take such a haughty attitude toward prostitution.
"If Sin really wanted help with her mental health, she could put herself in hospital."
I think want sin wants is someone to make her feel better about herself.
Telling her to go to a hospital where people are paid to care is not quite the same as getting help from someone who is doing it out of the goodness of their heart, because they genuinely care about her existence, not because they're getting paid to.
