Psychopaths: how can you spot one?

I already tried to kill someone in my own home because I lost control and acted on impulse. If I had of succeeded in killing him, there is no way I would have been able to avoid prison because there are witnesses who saw him arrive.

I have to avoid certain situations because I can't stop myself from acting on impulse in those situations, and I don't like losing control like that.

And this is how I have to live my life as well. You would have been in my position if you did kill him.

“How many psychopaths go to a psychiatrist for mental distress, unless they’re in prison? It doesn’t happen,”

Said by Hare, I wonder if this means that a psychopath wouldn't seek out therapy for murder fantasies...

Before the internet I think it was like that. People didn't have that resource to look anything up. Most of your people with dissorders like antisocial had no idea there was anything wrong with them. Tell it was to late and they were in prison.

Now with this generation that grew up with the internet and social media. They can read about all this stuff and diagnose themselfs and that is the problem we have now. A bunch of people 30 and under that diagnosed themselves and preetend to be that personality. All because of there lack of people skills.

Do you think books didn't exist? lol.

Of course books existed but I completely agree it's an entirely new generation with information at it's fingertips.  I have often asked others my age what they thought we would be like had we had the ability to find an internet forum such as the ones we all know and participate in to gather not only information about any given disorder, but share common experiences too.  Certainly I would have grown up differently. I would have been better prepared to live the life I was dealt and the complications it came with.  Being 20 today and having AsPD (using that as an example) is not the same as it was those years ago.  There is so much truth in the above statement. People found out as they were locked away and/or had to go through the court system.

I'm not a monster/hollywood  psychopath. But I might as well be diagnosed ASPD, and I have sought therapy before to better understand the mechanics of my inner world.

What about those who've actually been diagnosed? Are they somehow a tier above those who self-diagnose? Is it better to just take someone else's word as enough?

Many in the field these days are quick to throw a misdiagnosis at someone, consequently getting them treated or medicated in ways that could be maladaptive toward mental wellness. Some don't even get a good grasp of the patient's context for their behavior, such as labeling someone as having full blown depression shortly after the death of someone they knew, critiquing the display without gauging the underlying reasons.

The problem isn't the ability to be labeled or label yourself, the problem is what happens after that, what they (those in the field and the patient) aim to "do about it".

If a normal person goes in search for why they don't get along or why they feel uncomfortable around people. (Due to spending all there time on social media) And they diagnose themselves as a sociopath. They are going to read up on it and they will start to act as such. If someone thought they were a sociopath it wouldn't be hard at all for them to convince a doctor they were one.

Its like telling a child he has ADHD. All that does is gives a child a excuse to get in trouble in school or get bad grades. They can just say its because i have ADHD. This is all common sense

Are you serious ? I can only speak for myself. I have talked to a lot of psychologists and psychiatrists in my life and only one of them was voluntary. This is the one i have now. Self diagnoses is a joke. If anyone dug deep enough into themselves they could think they had all sorts of mental problems. A older indevidual like 35+ would stand a better chance of self diagnoses.

A personality disorder diagnosis is more elaborate than that. Any psychiatrist/psychologist/licensed to diagnose social worker with a brain will take a look at all aspects of a persons life before they diagnose them with a personality disorder of any kind.

This includes upbringing, family, social, occupational, etc. You can't just waltz into a shrinks office displaying symptoms of the disorder and get diagnosed with it. A shrink with a brain will notice if your current behavior doesn't match the past ones you are explaining.

Personality disorders are long patterns of behaviors. My personality hasn't changed much since I was in elementary school. Heck, I remember parts of preschool. Still the same. This is because personalities are set early.
