I used to have a kind of a ritual when I was younger. If I promised to myself I'd do something I would go to whatever lengths to keep the promise. The promises usually involved physical stress.

I usually promise other people I'll do something and then don't do it at all.

Children seem quite attached to the notion of "promises" from my experience. How seriously my school's peers treated promise-making conditioned me to even now still feel uncomfortable promising anything.
