 no. let's say you have a vision one day, when you're feeling down on your luck, depressed, hopeless. the vision is some sort of higher power telling you everything will be okay, just trust in him. relying on that alone can mean a simple hallucination is taken as gospel (lol) and you change your life because of it.

don't you want to be in control a little bit? or does this help you to justify some of the atrocities you've committed?

 If there is even a smidgen of hope that it's true, there is so much to gain, and possibly much to lose (although I tend to lean towards universalism, but that's another philosophical kettle of fish altogether...)
