I'm not asking for your opinions on the topic as a whole, more so I'm asking who has or hasn't been and to otherwise elaborate on how they believe it's impacted their own lives.

I was not struck as a child, and I largely believe that's how I've opted to use words instead of violence to accomplish things. My folks still enforced house rules and made me follow what I needed to for school and stuff, but they were able to accomplish all of this by talking to me like an adult over all subjects that were an issue.

By allowing it to be an open discussion, instead of doing something "because they told me to" I did as they wished "because it makes sense". They had the time and patience to rationalize it all to me, and a lot of my advantages in patience and the like I'd solely put on their shoulders.

Yes. It's just another reason for me to despise those people.

If you need to resort to violence to teach a lesson without at least trying a verbal approach or taking things away, you're probably an idiot or someone who enjoys hurting children.

"they helped me"

In the sense that they scared you and deterred you from breaking the rules, sure. That didn't really help you though; it helped your parents.

I see your point. I'll agree to an extent.

In some cases, parents spank their children for things that aren't illegal. That's more so what I was referring to. Did your parents ever spank you for doing illegal things, or just for things that they didn't like/didn't want you doing? As a kid, I never did illegal things and therefore never was spanked for anything illegal.

Most of my spankings were a result of "talking back" and "not showing respect to elders."

because, people who dont learn to respect authority and follow rules, end up in prison for doing the same types of things as adults
