What do you think is in this picture?

It walks with two legs, it says quack, quack, quack... It certainly LOOKS like a duck.

What do you think it is?

What is the image depicting?  A duck.  What it is could be explained a number of ways: frequencies of light, pixels, code, etc.  Which do you care about?  Duck is the answer for you.

It could be an alien wearing a duck suit, acting like a duck in every conceivable way.

Prove that it's a duck.

I already know it's not a duck.  It's a picture of a duck.  This is a new premise.

The only way to prove it is a duck is to agree on a set of observations that mean the same thing to us, by whatever measure of convention and tradition, etc.

It also depends who I'm proving it to.

Yes but if you make figuring out if that's a duck so complicated that you need to philosophize over it then I think your philosophy is probably needlessly complex and Occam's razor kills it.

Well obviously that image is of a duck but what if it was an animal we hadn't seen before? Then Buttered Toast's method makes more sense because in the end it is just an agreed upon set of traits and characteristics to classify it.

Just joking. In this case it's a photo of a fake animal that doesn't exist. Probably photoshopped or otherwise they've made a realistic looking doll or something and taken a photo. That's the simplest explanation.

So it's a fake animal.
