It uses Halloween as a culture to go through Christmas tropes, making it a Christmas movie.
It'd be like having St. Patricks Town trying to idolize fasting after their paragon made a visit to Lent Town; The movie becomes about Lent.
Edit: The movie even rushes right by Halloween at the very beginning to get it over with. The holiday goes into 364 day retirement to make it all about Presents.

The movie is about Halloween characters, in a Halloween setting, making culturally Halloween mistakes, based on their distinctly Halloween perspective, in a movie that is dripping with Halloween vibes in every possible way. They barely even spend any time in Christmas Town, or the real world. Christmas in this movie is mostly just referential. They're having difficulty comprehending it specifically because the context is raw Halloween. That's kind of the point.

They barely even spend any time in Existential Drama Dreamland, or a world of primarily humans. Existential drama in this show is just referential. They're having difficulty comprehending it specifically because the context is filtered through Animals.
That's kind of your point.

Them being animals in Bojack is as relevant as Christmas in NBC. It's not the primary context and themes, it's just referential. They make side jokes about their species, sometimes it shows a bit of theming with their life choices, but that's it. The existentialism is the prevalent theme, message, context, vibe, etc., it encompasses so much more of the whole of the work, just like Halloween does in NBC.
