A lot of them are in pretty good shape actually, at least enough to constitute a range between there and your assumption. The biggest thing they're more typically guilty over's bad nutrition, but as we've seen on Epic Mealtime you can be in shape even if you're shoveling shit in your mouth based on your lifestyle.
I agree that none of them would start another Civil War, but they are primed to respond if another were to initiate it for them. As complacent and fearful people, it'd be seen as easier to stick with your side if the rift is otherwise already happening in front of them.

There could be a corporate incentive to split a large enough alliance of companies from the US as their own nation. Without leftist resistance they could make bigger, more grandstanding changes that line their pockets even heavier, and as their own nation they could promise it staying that way.
The rich are pretty damn rich, and people are easily led around right now.
