Perfume Reviews

This pandemic has me house-bound looking for new hobbies and wooah nelly have I found one. The wonderful niche world of perfume decanting/ splitting/ trading/ sample collecting. There is a loosely-associated community spread across half a dozen subreddits and a few websites for trading perfume samples, and selling/ requesting high end decants.

Through my new indevor I learned something tragic. For years I thought my favorite perfume was a popular classic. Unpon further inspection of the large, half-empty bottle I bought years ago I discovered that what the sales clerk pulled out from under the counter all those years ago was not the original, pop- favorite! Alas, it is a bottle of a limited edition flanker that was only available that year for sale T.T

With this information I've decided to retire my beautiful, Rose Vanilla Gourmand to only be used for date nights, weddings, lifetime achievement award ceremonies, and other special occasions. With this decision my perfume sampling hobby has taken on a new purpose- I must find a new perfume for casual use. Occasions that warrent wearing a perfume but not my best perfume. Some strong contenders thus far are Angel, Black Opium, La Vie est Belle, and Gucci Bloom.

Here I will record my thoughts and experiences testing all of the perfumes in my collection- and hopefully getting ahold of all the ones I desire to try.

Lancome La Vie est Belle L'Eau de Parfum

initial impression
Very floral top notes immediately detectable
Not immediately as gourmand or spicy as I remember it being. After 10 minutes familiar middle notes come out

Iris notes are very noticable, a nice perfume but not as spicy/ gourmand as I am looking for. Good perfume for professional day occasions. Slightly dissapointing compared to what I thought I remembered this scent smelling like (got a free sample at Sephora 2 ish years ago and liked it. This is a sample I got from belk earlier this week)

Hour later: mostly base notes noticable, still too floral for my preference. Not smelling much of the vanilla, praline or patchouli notes I prefer

Overall reveiw: predominantly Iris scent, lacking in the nutty/ spicy notes that normally classify a gourmand perfume. Smells good tho. Personal preference 4/10 not a go-to but I would consider using the rest of the sample on random days just to mix things up, so long as the day was no special occasion.

I'm confused that this doesnt smell the way I remember. I'm going to check my Sephora purchase history and see if free samples are included in past purchase records. I wasnt very aware of perfume flankers until starting this perfume collecting hobby so I may have not noticed if what I tried was a flanker.

I tried Dior sauvage and hated it but it made me feel very rich wearing it. It’s extremely strong, and smells like a rich persons ass.

I really like kat von d perfume, and tbh, I love kat von d’s products. (Not the new branding tho, the old original kat von d stuff)

i was just pleasantly surprised by the perfumes i think its like saint and sinner. I love the fucking vibe of the brand and I’m super sad the internet like banished her from the makeup world simply because she had an opinion they didn’t agree with.

(Cancel culture can suck my dick)

i tried Gucci bloom and was like, dissapointed by it. It just smells like dead flowers. Not even kidding.

i’ve heard people raving about black opium so would love to hear your opinions on it as I’ve been tempted to get that one.

 Mugler Angel

slightly chemical at first, which I've heard mentioned in other's reviews, but a detectable nuttiness and faint chocolate notes at the edges

Doesnt take long for initiatial chemical scent to fade and for chocolate, tonka, vanilla, and caramel to become more prominent,

Over time notes of vanilla and hazelnut come out and after a few hours it settles into a delectable caramel nuttiness.

I detect a small bit of patchouli base notes but only a little.

Overal review: 8/10 smells delicious, I would certainly wear this every day. If I could change anything I would add just a bit more spiciness to the base notes. A true gourmand perfume

Edit: after several hours when the top and middle notes have gone, the warm woody notes (patchoili sandalwood) are more noticeable

Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Nuit Blanche Eau de Parfum

I have a black opium original coming in the mail that I cant wait to review, but in the meantime here is one of the flankers.

Smells good at first, mostly floral with subtle woodyness

Hints of vanilla come up after a few minutes

Alice said it smells like the color Violet (not violet flowers)

Much more floral then original Black Opium

Hour in smells like a pretty deep floral

90 minutes later some sweet vanilla starts to come out

2+ hours more sweet now, still floral but more sweet floral than crisp green floral. Some sweet vanilla

Kinda smelling like light vanilla, jasmine, and white musk base notes now. If anything this late base note stage is my favorite part. I could imagine opening a decadent vanilla creme dessert with a scent like this.

*Arms got wet so perfume reapplied*

Immediately after replying no sense of sweetness or vanilla, super crisp green floral. I think it is giving me a slight headache this time

After about 2 hours I can smell the transition from white blossom into coffee

Overall reveiw: too energetic floral for my liking. I prefer my florals to be really sweet like gardenia or ylang ylang. This perfume smells like very crisp white blossom. The listed fragrance notes say orange blossom but it came off as lily in my opinion.

Normally I wouldnt wear a perfume like this but I put this on and alice went wild  She got really close and huffed me for a few minutes then started eating me out so that was pretty cool. I give it a 3 for scent plus a bonus point bc my partner likes the smell on me so a final score of 4/10. I doubt I'll ever buy this full sized but I'll keep the rest of the sample on hand for date nights/ sexytimes with bae.

Sucreabeille Cream Tea Eau de Parfum

Right out the bottle smells like cherry children's tylonal.

On the skin Starts w strong raspberry notes

Cinnamon and chai spice (without the tea) come out quickly after application. Reminds me of autumn scented potpourri and wreaths

Dissapointing. The name lead me to belive this would smell mostly like chai with sugar and a splash of milk with a small raspberry touch, instead this smells like mostly raspberry with some autumn spices and no detectable black tea.

Burnt sugar notes more noticeable after about 10 minutes

Raspberry is fading after 20-30 is min. More pleasant now
Hourish maybe little more later, not as fruity, but not very chai tea. Cream tea is a misleading name for this scent honestly.
Smells slightly sweet though, not much longevity, it's almost gone already. fading notes of fruit and sugar are barely hanging on.

Overall review: this scent as a perfume named Cream Tea and described by perfumer as "inspired by our second-favorite caffeinated beverage: a warm mug of creamy, frothy, caffeine-injected tea. A blend of chai tea, burnt sugar, white musk, warm milk, and hot scones slathered with raspberry jam and honey" = 2/10. Should have put way more focus on the raspberry jam and scones and left out any mention of chai or tea completely. Very misleading, not at all what I thought I was going to get.

Review of the scent, no name, and only the second half of the description: "hot scones slathered with raspberry jam and honey, [this scent] will make you feel warm, cozy, and secure on cold winter Mondays when you have to get out of bed." =  3/10 I dont like the strong bitter "raspberry" cough syrup top notes, but the autumn potpourri smell later on isnt bad. I will likely never wear this perfume again, but I wouldnt mind this as an ambient gift-shop scent. The short-lived cinnamon sugar middle notes are the best part in my opinion.
