It's good, but it only dips a little bit into the masochism of ballet. It's still a good start, even if the main character's life is wicked distracting.

That masochism is a part of what I find odd.

What, that they have to starve themselves to get that swan shape and be easier for the male dancers to throw around? Or is it that they have to practice and stretch themselves to absurd points just to be "good enough"? Is it that they have been doing this to themselves since they were little kids, like a violin player?

It is truly suffering, but in the name of art. Art is the best and arguably most meaningful reason to suffer if you ask me.

It's more like learning Latin in that it's an outdated language but shows it's roots within what it's become. There's beauty in learning the older art forms, and understanding that can follow through seeing it's existential tethers.

I'd otherwise compare it to what Jazz music has become in the modern age.

Ok yeah, it's a bit like learning Latin. Still, only weirdos enjoy Latin.

As a side note, I think we should make Latin the official scientific language. Nobody speaks Latin natively, so nobody gets an advantage -- all of us are going to be equally shit. Not like now, when those pesky native speakers can look down on us.

And this is why I think you and Xena are a tiny bit screwed in the head. Not full-blown insane, but just a bit weird.

When is suffering otherwise worth it other than as a form of expression, for Science and Kinks plainly?

Ballet is hardcore femme, it's what women truly are in that it appears delicate but under it's surface is something more hardcore than a man could truly fathom. It captures all the strengths and societal perceptions of otherwise in one art form through the beauty shrouding it's effort.

Did you ever look into the works of Cirque de Soleil?

@ Turncoat: yes  :)  We're on the same page for once.

I do like old classics that have been replaced by other things.

I love Cab Calloway, Louis Prima and the Big Band sound, old jazz, and lindy hop/swing/ hip hop hybrids, too  :)

Blah. If  ^  that vid won't play, the title is "Swing Riot Invitational Battle Part 3 - Crossover&Finale - Montreal Swing Riot 2015"

Wouldn't suffering, as a means to an end, be worth it as long as the goal is worthwhile? Perhaps I'm generalizing and watering down your idea of 'suffering' here too much, but I'd almost flip it around: A lot of things would lose their meaning if we stripped them of the sweat and pain involved.

No. Few things are worth that kind of suffering.

Kids, science (debatably.) Art... the preservation of a species?

I would never put myself through that for romantic love, that's for durn sure.

That's why watching the end result, the reward after all those years that some kid beat the crap out of him/herself, evokes such strong feelings in us.

Pleasure to see you here under your main. What's your taste in art, Inquirer? I bet you liked pinocchio.

Rewarded Toil in conjunction with Sunken Investment is the gold standard of satisfaction, as is demonstrated through the affluence of the rich and the frustrations of the poor, while successfully demonstrated through temple monk practices to it's most baseline degrees. Phone games and MMOs have honed in on this principle, hard, but they've learned to do it with fake currency so that you have less familiarity with it's value. It's even a big part of the disdain towards "Pay to Win" players, as they 'didn't really earn it'.

It falls into this classic speech (again):

Without a sense of earning something, it feels less real. Even watching others earn insane feats through frivolous, mundane sports (like speedrunning Mario 64, competing in a Smash Bros tournament, or defeating Dark Souls with bongos) is impressive for how much must have gone into it, rather than just watching some random playthrough from someone's first attempt. In that same respect, ballet is both rarer now and shows satisfying levels of artistic perfection through it's intense levels of self-inflictive toil.

Joy comes through building up strain/suspense and then releasing it once you reach it's endpoint, much like Sex, Jenga, or Tony Hawk Pro Skater games; One without the other has it cease meaning anything. Twilight Zone tries to demonstrate this in the episode "A Nice Place To Visit" and otherwise did a swell job making it into something their audience could quickly grasp.
