 Bad news again. They think the infection is a coincidence and decided to do a transplant. As morbid as this sounds now we are just waiting for an organ donor on the east coast with her blood type to pass away in a way that doesn't damage the liver. Usually livers come from car accidents, but due to covid people are driving less. Her doctor still thinks it could be as soon as a day or two since she is at the top of the list.

Rationally I know it makes sense to want Alice to live more than a stranger, but emotionally it feels dirty hoping for someone to die.  I hope someone who is suicidal, who already wanted to die, is released from their unhappy life as quickly and painlessly as possible, preferably by sudden head injury... or I hope it is someone evil, a child molester, and that their death not only saves Alice, but also takes their evil out of this world.

if a donor cant be found, cant they just have alice live with a part of a kidney instead of just letting her die? surely the entire kidney cant be unusable as thats rarely the case, right?

Its her liver, not kidney. Her entire liver is failing.

This is appropriately morbid. 

As much as I for whatever reason care about what's happening, as an aside purely it's worth appreciating the darkness of the point you've just made. 

Rationally I know it makes sense to want Alice to live more than a stranger, but emotionally it feels dirty hoping for someone to die. 

Fuck 'em, it's not like you're murdering them yourself and you have your own priorities to worry about. 

I wouldn't blame you if you went all axe crazy for the organ, it's a sensible motive despite being a crazy thing to do.

You don't have to do some sort of moralist lip service to get a transplant out of a corpse faster. 

You hope someone dies, let it sink in. It doesn't make you a bad person it makes you human.

It's not wrong at all to think this way. I even agree, I hope something happens to someone too, so she can get what she needs. She's my friend, not the other random person. That's the unfortunately vicious nature of life.

 I'm definitely hoping someone dies, as soon as possible tbh. But meta, it feels weird thinking about the fact I'm hopeing for soneone to die. I have no guilt.

Sorry to hear what you and Alice are going through, I hope she gets that liver she needs and recovers fully so she can do the 'i lived bitch' meme and you both can be obnoxiously cute again

 sorry i keep saying kidney when i mean liver. do you think they can let her live with a part of her liver if they cant find a donor in time? its possible, it happens with rats and rats are fine, so i did research and found its possible with humans to. or is the entire liver damaged? also, rats temporarily can have the organ of another rat with a DIFFERENT not the same blood type, be inside them is the immune system is suppressed, and i researched to see if this is also the case with humans, and it is. if you cant find the liver of the right bloodtype in time, perhaps you could ask the doctor is they are willing to give alice a liver of the wrong blood type to give her an extra month until they find a proper donor? with todays medicine in a short term scenario, that is actually possible. they will probably say no because of ethical reasons, like "why would i use 2 livers one one person when there is such a shortage?" but maybe the doctor might say yes if you bribe them, or ask for just a piece of a liver. you never know unless you ask.

Her entire liver is trashed. The whole thing as shut now and no part of it will work on its own

I don't have any communication with the doctor. Because of HIPPA laws doctors can only disclose medical information to next or kin or someone the patient signed a waiver for.

Alice's parents tried to have me added to the disclosure list, but because she is over 18 she would have to add me herself... and she can't because she is unconscious.

is they are willing to give alice a liver of the wrong blood type to give her an extra month until they find a proper donor? with todays medicine in a short term scenario, that is actually possible. 

 Alice can only ever get 1 liver transplant. They wont give her a wrong liver to buy time because that takes the liver away from someone else on the list. A month is much longer than expected anyway, she is at the top of the list for the entire east coast. The doctor expects it will only be 1 or 2 days because so many people die every day.

Thank you sweet mystery rat for your ideas, unfortunately that's just not how they do transplants for people. :(

 Alice is stable now, she is sedated and still on a ventilator. The bleeding has stopped and they are still giving her blood since she lost so much. Her kidneys are fine but they have her on dialysis to help get the toxins out of her body quicker. They have her prepped for surgery, and we are just waiting for a liver now.
