Pain can be subjective. If there was research it provides a good approximation.

no you could just assume which parts of the brain would light up in the case of attempted suicides

There's a shit ton of pain research out there and many things can be assumed by the insight it provides. Research on which areas of the brain die out faster, what areas of the body produce the most pain from injury, length of time an individual remains conscious after committing the act, how long the individual is alive after committing the act, drug effects, self-report from survivors, and a whole number of other factors can be taken in to account.
Primal provided some information above. If anyone is interested in going further with it, a Google Scholar search can help you find more literature. People legitimately study this and make assumptions based on strong evidence.
