If you saw the chat then you know I was mostly reacting to being bitched at.
He's effectively saying that he needs a strong enough distraction to not fall into those patterns again, but what can remain distracting forever for someone who is so prone to boredom, to loss of interest? He desires pursuits and recognizes that drugs and alcohol will get in the way, but he doesn't sound like he actually desires getting away from said drugs and alcohol in lieu of that.
The desire needs to be there independently, otherwise the behavior will come back once the pursuit loses it's luster.

Tbh having vices is the first thing I can think of when it comes to "being self-destructive". All vices impact your life in a negative way. Seems like yours do too. Alcoholism is one of the worst because it's convenient and accessible. If one cares about oneself, he should do his best to control his vices, and I hope you succeed in that.
I don't care if I'm feeding him, and I certainly don't care if you or anyone else thinks he's "winning", whatever the fuck that means.
