I might as well give a nod to Hegl and Voltaire as well.

I'm less well versed in their ideas, tho. 

I studied some Enlightenment philosophers formally, in a classroom.

I studied others in my spare time, without professional help.

What I do remember about that particular time period is overshadowed by tidbits on the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars, a few years later.

The time was greatly influenced by John Locke's writing, and much of Europe was at war with various monarchies, fighting for various notions of freedom... or so they said. All too often, nations go to war under banners of 'freedom' and enslave the populations of other countries for their greed.

Global abolition of the slave trade was still a glimmer on the horizon at this point.

That's what I remember about the 1780s off the top of my head, no googling.

Jeremy Bentham's work on panopticism and Utilitarian Ethics stands out in my memory as well. So do Kant and Newton.

*Edit: Newton was a few decades earlier. But people were still expanding on his theories :P

When Inky mentioned the book Guns, Germs and Steel  smthg about the title sounded familiar, tho I stated that I had not read the book.

I googled and realized that I had not, and stated that I may have seen a reference to it somewhere in an anthro textbook.

You promptly told me to shutup and asked if I went to a strip mall college. lol
