we are life... you should look how similar a human egg, and a chicken egg, and even a fish egg look. the the egg grows into w.e body plan its dna have for it, but there is no changing the fact that life in general is all connected. you, me, and any slime mold.. we are very similar, and none more important than the other relative to life as a whole.
so what is different between the individual human, and the individual slime mold cell? they both live and die. sure, perhaps relative to themselves, the individual feels a range from "good to bad", but that's just evolutionary, and we can be conscious of that. we can be conscious of the fact that our values, our desires are beyond our control, and more instinctual, or developed based on our genetics or environment. you said it yourself, life is meaningless, and we are meaningless as individuals. we exist for only a small blip of time in what clearly is a universe that exists and continues despite us. to come to the conclusion that it isn't worth caring about because "you" as an individual won't experience the future is a bit shot sited
life is awesome. it completely makes sense. i can totally imagine a quantum computer being able to program in the properties of our universe, and then simulate it. i can imagine quarks clumping together to form protons, and those clumping to form hydrogen. i can see the hydrogen forming into stars, and stars creating the heavier elements, going supernova, and forming our solar system. i can see our oceans being filled with so much energy and complexity, that self replicating forms will occur, and those forms will either be successful in continuing their species, or they wont.
the universe has a massive, fascinating story that has only just begun, and we are not just a part of it... it's not so bold a claim to say that we are the universe itself, and to identify "ourselves" as being a part of and living only for this blip in time that means so little, and to neglect the present and future of humanity and perhaps even your other selves... it's small minded
i really hope humanity can live on for ever. i hope we can master the laws of the universe, and become gods. it will be a challenge, we are so small right now, just a few bacteria colonies on the side of a single rock. we are really fragile, divided, most of us are extremely ignorant, and want nothing more for the entire bacteria colony than ignorant happiness. there is only a few of us, as i can see, looking to the stars, and attempting to manifest this amazing future where humanity isn't just a victim clinging to life, dependent on "mother earth" and luck to survive.
i imagine being born thousands of years from now. perhaps i wont be as lucky as i am this time. perhaps ill be born in china. that would suck, but in the future i imagine... even a Chinese could have an opportunity to get a space ship, and be a privateer space miner, or settle other colonies. there will be so many opportunities, and as life spreads out through the galaxy, and millions of years pass, the diversity that evolution will introduce to the universe will be so amazing -- assuming that diversity doesn't exist already. i don't like the idea of children being born into a society where they are trapped, and if we stay on earth.. as our population increases, as capitalism continues to evolve, and as the older corporations and government grab more and more power here on earth, humanity, specially the lower classes will find themselves less and less "free"
you seem awfully optimistic for a cynical person
