Oh Daddy, must you spoil my fun?
I just want to play... Won't you let me play Daddy?

"This accomplishes the same end while removing the dependency."
What's wrong with the dependency, and why not offer both so people have a choice?
"I could maybe understand your mindset say... 20 years ago. But now everything is digitized from GPS directions to books."
Yes, and while we're at it why don't we plug ourselves into a variant of "Second Life" or "Surrogates" and no longer care about our physical selves.
"The infrastructure is already in place, and the industry is already shifting heavily toward online education."
They're pushing that for college, a system that's easy enough to cheat from my experiences with it, and pre-college they're pushing "online homeschooling", a phenomenon that's likely to lead to people taking shortcuts and becoming socially stunted.
There is value in the mentor/mentee relationship, and school offers that on a wider scale than one on one while also offering variety and a means of socializing. The problem is how poorly they're using it, not the structure itself.
"Ignorance is no longer an excuse, you can know virtually anything you want. With a little self discipline and a plan."
I personally don't have that much confidence in people. They need to be herded or they will stagnate if given the room to try on their own. Self-learners ought to be given the tools to become better from possessing a unique trait, but I don't think that'd translate well across the board as a whole when the general person has a variety of reasons to choose to learn nothing.
