So, will the post history from here and all the user accounts be transferred to the new home? It would suck to lose everything, and people already say their user names here are taken on the new forum. Registered users here should have priority to keep their usernames.

I am completely against Tor restrictions. We have 1-2 annoying spammers who claim to use proxies anyway. I heard Psychforums don't let Tor users register. Don't be like all the other fucktard forum owners please, anonymity is too important here. Maybe you can make exceptions for known accounts to keep using Tor at least. Personally, I really don't intend to keep visiting without decent protection.

Post history and user accounts will be transferred when the new forum is done with beta. As such, existing user accounts and posts on the new forum will be wiped prior to the transfer.

Tor restrictions is an ongoing debate. Might last well after beta, too.

I brought up with her in PM the username situation and she assured me at least that each phase will be wiping the registrations and posts. The snagged names are a temporary thing.

Damn it. Figured as much though.

I recently talked to some members about the state of the forum and the quality of the content. The consensus was that while the freedom of this forum is appealing it also suffocates meaningful discussions through spam and keeps people from putting effort into threads and posts.

We had a lot of debate about the question of moderation in the past and the main argument against moderation was that the forum shouldn't turn into a heavily moderated place like the other mental health forums. Also nobody liked the idea of someone having too much power.

I think a good middle way would be to give thread creators mod powers so that they can prevent their own threads from derailing.

Possible Mod powers:

o The thread creator can hide single posts. Members don't see hidden posts by default but get the option to unhide single or all posts in a thread.

o It can be chosen between a blacklist, whilelist or no list at all. Which approach is used can be still changed after thread creation.

Blacklist: Everyone can post except members on the blacklist.

Since it's very easy to create new accounts one would also need the feature to blacklist all accounts that got created after a certain point in time.

Whitelist: Nobody can post except people on the whitelist.

The whitelist is interesting because it would enable members to create blog-like threads where they could only post for themselves or a few select others. That might compensate for the lack of profile functions.

Concerns:

o Certain Members might get blacklisted in most threads.

I guess if that happens it happens for a good reason.

o Thread creators will misuse their power.

That will happen but in general I think people are more interested in input than keeping people from answering their threads.

If there are some members who like to mess around on a regular basis won't affect the rest of the forum.

Advantages:

o No centralized mod power. No rule set for the whole forum.

o The possibility to keep threads from becoming off-topic will encourage people to invest more time and effort.

o There's still place for the usual drama and unmoderated talk.

o Every account is equal.

Any thoughts on this idea?

I completely agree.

Phase 2 has had some modifications to the things we've decided to complete first. Instead of putting much time into profile, we left the page pretty bare, and instead focused on the chat. We didn't include all the functionality the chat will come to have, but instead just the basics. I realize the chat is a fundamental part of SC now, and I think it should be included early in development. Twitch has an excellent chat service, which we would like to use as inspiration to our chat, it has no history (which I believe many members like), and it has no avatars. Personally, I like the avatars, so we will be adding them laters, but for now, it's pretty basic.

We added a new text editor for editing posts and threads. It uses Markdown, but we highly customized it to make it easier to use. Unfortunately videos currently aren't working, but something we will have to get working in the future. Hopefully we can release Phase 2 this evening.

I think by allowing thread creators more control over the direction of their thread, we give another level of character development to these creators. Not only do we see their response to our posts, but we also see how they manage their threads, and handle that little taste of power. So what if we get a couple of people who are "abusive" and hides comments, or something. This only allows us to know our fellow members better. Soon you will know if someone is more inclined to attempt to hide slights against him or her. Soon you will know which members desire intellectual discussion, and which desire to troll. As a result of this functionality, our forum will turn from a random place where people post, and spam, and troll each other, to a place where real discussion can be enabled if thread creators will it so.

I wish for a forum with the ability to have on-topic threads with OUT heavy moderation. This provides decent solution.

"o The thread creator can hide single posts. Members don't see hidden posts by default but get the option to unhide single or all posts in a thread."
This is nice.

"Whitelist: Nobody can post except people on the whitelist."
There's a race joke in this somewhere.

"That might compensate for the lack of profile functions."
Phase two has profiles listed.

Overall, it's interesting, no problems are coming to mind immediately. It makes topics more like hosting instead of creating. Seeing who hosted the topic will tell people what to expect, so "misusing their power" I'd say is an exaggeration.
