They also see the risk of becoming attached to making money destroying their integrity. It's like when a band starts catering to business needs instead of sticking to their signature style, they are usually doing it for sales instead of integrity, so those more attached to integrity spit in their general direction. For example, there's how some people treat those who write commercial jingles compared to how they'll treat underground music. It has a few things in common with Hipster Angst.

The money is demonized as it's seen as the beginning of a downward spiral of greed and the suicide of the purity behind their works. The introduction of money makes their art change from art into something more "corporate". Those who claim to be above it see it no different from becoming a whore.

"Van gough. Whatever. He wasn't in the right market, or didn't have a distribution channel, or any sort of appreciation. Nothing to do with rarity."
He's just one of many artists like himself, and he's often used as an example of how hype helps sell art. He had distribution and he had the market, they however didn't care for him because his work looked like shit to them without the extra bits on top to make them see him as more than just "another artist". I've seen amazing work from unknowns, yet they are still largely unknown from the lack of hype even when they're making money within their profession.

Check into his brother, Theo van Gogh.

Do you have any idea what being poisoned is like?

YOU WILL NOT PRODUCE ART WORK THAT FINE. OMFG

He was doing drugs. Plain and simple. What does an orthodox minister have to say about drugs. Think about that one?

What does a respected businessman go down in history as dying from? Think about that one.

He was a very, very sad person at points. He likely spent money that should have been used on food to relieve himself of pain, for a time anyway.

Apparently some claim he had a mix of schizophrenia and bipolar. I'd not be surprised personally.

If not for his brother, Van Gogh would have been nothing. Theo is why Vincent rarely had to stop following his passion, paying for him out of his own pocket out of pity like some sort of charity case when no one would buy his works.

Vincent couldn't have survived on his own. It's believed that he ate yellow paint to "get the happiness inside him", ignoring that it's toxic.

"Based on his paintings, and his massively agonized serotonin perception, he probably did drugs."
He couldn't afford them. He instead was constantly out in the sun dehydrating, eating paint, and going crazy as he overtime became more and more prone to emotional imbalances. I believe he was crazy and a victim of certain toxins, not drug addled.

Do some more research, just because you like his works doesn't mean it was likable enough to succeed with that on it's own. The poor guy had a lot of problems and suffered through much.

How Theo must have felt at points is more painful to think about really, especially if Vincent really was schizophrenic/bipolar.

Use your eyes.

He died from a sexually transmitted disease. He was probably hitting up the brothels.

He died on 25 January 1891. The cause of death was listed as dementia paralytica caused by "heredity, chronic disease, overwork, sadness".[3] In 1914, Theo's body was exhumed and reburied with his brother at Auvers-sur-Oise.[14]

Now if you can show me 400 letters that ask his brother to send money. I'll believe that your version of history is the correct one.

Surprisingly, his incredible artistic talent went undeveloped and unrecognized until he was 27 years old,
after he had already failed at two other career choices, as an art dealer and a Protestant minister. Under the
shroud of family shame when he was found incompetent to follow in his father's ministerial foot steps, he began to
study art. He obsessively poured himself into this newly found talent and completed thousands of sketches and oil
paintings before he shot himself to death at the age of 37 years old.

This is somehwta accurate. Nobody likes someone who isn't an orthodox tight ass, except his brother the business guy.

"Comedy is another persons Tragedy."
I thought Comedy was Tragedy + Time. Somewhere on this forum I'd posted a video where someone tried to analyze the time it takes and theories as to why, but I'm having trouble remembering what to look for to find it...

There's also the Mel Brooks perspective: “Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.” ― Mel Brooks.

"I don't see Van Gough as starving or struggling. If anything he had conduct disorder issues, and decided to travel the world and live life to the fullest, and that is reflected in his works, or in his paintings where he expressed himself."
He didn't always have the luxury of deciding where and how to live, but he definitely was expressive. I still see tortured when I look over the life he had, but if he had been successful, for all we know his pieces might have been worse.

From socio gaydar to van gogh...gotta love it!

Agree with the art critiques though. Artists need to to die before they become appreciated for their talent. Other than that, it's advertising and some is is such utter junk that with paint, leaves  and some glue I could call myself an "artiste" but I would starve to death on that for my sole source of income.

Huh, I never actually read the letters themselves beyond appropriated quotes.

Here's a somewhat promising link I just found I haven't really looked into yet. This is likely to make a fun read later today for myself anyway. If you feel like reading them as well it seems worth sharing.
