Melatonin, Xanax (Alprazolam), Ativan (Lorazepam) and Valium over the last 10 years or so. I don't take anything regularly.
Melatonin is decent for me for very short term usage. I build a tolerance to it quickly for some reason.
Ativan causes nystagmus for me and didn't really make me sleepy. It was actually kind of scary any time I tried to take it.
Xanax in it's smallest dosage, halved, is a decent sleep aid for me if anxious and that small of an amount doesn't leave me with next day hangover. A whole one will put me to sleep for a while.
Valium didn't really make me sleepy at a low dosage but it did allow me to fall asleep somewhat naturally. My mind was calm.
Just remembered another, Trazodone. It's not primarily used as a sleep aid but it put me out hard.
I also use lavender.
Re: Melatonin and sleep paralysis, I've never experienced that disorder but have lived with someone that has it frequently as a result of PTSD. I got them to try Melatonin for it and it was hit or miss so basically no change. It has to be terrifying though. I remember waking up to these muffled screams and shaking him until he woke up.
