I am going to guess that high dosing inositol may help, especially if anxiety is your issue.

5-htp will most certainly overload your serotonin in some cases leading to sleep. It is not without potential downsides. OTC, so... L-Tryptophan may be the better option, never tried that.

Over the counter sleep meds make me either hallucinate or make me respond like I'm on a caffeine rush.

I experimented with marijuana during college, and was surprised to see it helped my insomnia. Alcohol works too and is easy to come by, but hangover symptoms suck.

Of the non precription I know valerian, chamomile and melatonin.

Of the prescription sleepers I know about ambien, imovane, nitrazepam, rohypnol, halcion, remeron, theralen and propavan.

If it is anxiety that prevents you from sleep you might be helped by kava kava or phenibut.

Yeah, is it just me, or am I the only one that suspects people who end up with sleep paralysis are messing around with the melatonin?

Kava is good... what you want is the powder that numbs your lips to the touch. Apparently there are some off label brands that use the wrong portion of the plant, so that is something to watch out for as well if you get into the habit.

Phenibut is not something you want to mix with alcohol, otherwise you will run the very real risk of your nervous system shutting down to the point of slow and shallow breathing and potentially death.

I should have mentioned, I'm not interested in prescription.

Maybe it will help to also mention I'm interested because I've started taking ritalin and after it wears off at night it takes me a while to get to sleep. I don't have insomnia, but it is messing with my schedule. I'm looking for something light and that will leave no traces in my system come morning.

are this bad to take if one is predisposed to dissociation and has a family history of schizophrenia?
