Question about prison for any ex-convicts.

Can you dispel some of the stereotypes about prison?

Like, will you get shanked as soon as you go through the door, for no reason?

Is it really as crazy as people think it is, or do people just try to do their time and keep their head down?

How likely are you to get raped?

If you are not affiliated with any gang/subculture, are you fucked?

I'm sure others have similar questions.

You will not get shanked by anybody, unless you're a shit-talker.

People just try to do their time and keep their head down. There's no point in getting into any trouble.

Unlikely to get raped unless you allow yourself to be in debt to someone, or you don't fight when provoked.

Yeah, you sort of are fucked if you don't affiliate with any gang. Luckily, there's a gang for every ethnicity. The thing is, I fucking hate Aryan Brotherhood because they allow Jews to be their leaders, and they are allied with the Juggalos, so I stick with Nazi Lowriders and European Kindred.

Explain?

I wouldn't last in prison, I don't think.

How do you affiliate?

AND, what's the first thing you should do in prison?

Look up Thomas Silverstein and Tyler Bingham. For a 'white supremacist' gang, they sure know how to pick their leaders.

To affiliate, you need to hang with your own race. Never, ever, go with another race and try to hang out with them. Talk to your fellow people, make alliances, ask them about AB or Nazi Lowriders or whatever. Affiliation usually requires that you are an asset to the gang, so be prepared to do anything for them.

The first thing you should do in prison, is to understand the rules of the prison. Not just the rules that the correctional officers enforce, but the unwritten rules between convicts. Figure out the layout, know where your race hangs out. This I think is the most important thing.

When there's more crime going in and out of prison, then there's clearly a larger problem.

Prisons are actually generating more crime.

I'd like to make a variant of this question. You know those reality TV shows where "at risk" youth spend a day in prison, and they're paraded about in front of the inmates prior to entering the prison? Does anything remotely resembling that actually happen when a new inmate is introduced to the prison population? I mean, do you get hordes of inmates shrieking at the "white meat," trying to tear their own bars down, tossing bands of toilet paper that they've somehow set alight through the bars, threatening to rape and torture them as soon as they enter, and what not?

I'm thinking that this aspect of prison life may have been exaggerated by the media ever so slightly.

Nah, you won’t get shanked when you walk through the door. There are COs that keep an eye on things. People get knifed from time to time but it’s not common.  Rape is rare. It’s not like it’s portrayed on tv/movies. lol Some guys that serve long sentences have consensual sex with each other.

If you are not affiliated with any gang/subculture, are you fucked?

No. There are gangs and they’ll try to recruit you but you can decline. The biggest gangs up here are aboriginal gangs and bike gangs. They’ll fuck you up if you cause trouble but if you don't and you stick up for yourself you're fine.

The worst part of prison is the relentless boredom. Everyday is a repeat of the day before. And while there are a few interesting characters, for the most part you’re living with some of the stupidest people you could imagine.  When I was in the motto was “you do your own time”. So yeah, basically keep your head down and keep your eye on the prize, which is getting out as soon as you can (and not going back).

I don't know the reality shows you're talking about. I remember a few guys would yell things like "he's a pedophile" or "baby killer" when new guys were brought in to freak them out. They didn't know peds were kept in a separate block. It was like a form of hazing.
