Some people prefer to go without diagnosis for a number of reasons, but I suspect if you are a sociopath you are fairly aware of it diagnosis or not.

All psychological assessments are based on someone's 'opinion' at some point.
Psychology is not science, it is a long line of assumptions made by 'learned' people with other theorists to support and/or undermine them, depending on the political climate of the day.
Mr Hare based his study and his checklist on a captive audience. If you only access low functioning psychopaths that have been imprisoned then you are bound to formulate theories That are highly applicable to that demographic but fall a little short of being the all encompassing checklist he purports it to be.
He failed to assess a sufficient pool of females, failed to assess a sufficient pool of high functioning Paths....
I see no harm in further studies that may provide additional information to clarify and hone the assessment tool.
In the beginning, no-one was qualified to make the assessments. We all start somewhere.
