You speak sense whoameye (your reasons for doing so may however be suspect). I don't think I have AsPD, I've never been diagnosed with anything either, but I recognize certain behaviors in myself that correlate with it; callousness; aptitude for manipulation; lack of fear for my well-being when confronted with very real danger; risk taking...
Anyway, I think you're right. I think personality disorders have been fetishized by the media and it provides a convenient scape-goat and fantasy shield for some people. Outside of that, it's a somewhat attractive prospect, to have this part of you that's missing that allows you to to perform in manners outside the capacity of normal, psychologically well-rounded individuals.
I feel this way about people with Aspergers. I would love to try on a pair of Aspie goggles for a day.
That's the thing: most people actually DON'T idealize personality disorders...none of them. It's just a small population of the internet that does.
This is what society classes as "crazy" people because they are crazy. Borderlines are crazy, histrionics, narc, antisocials, etc
There is nothing attractive about threatening to kill yourself if your boyfriend leaves and there's nothing attractive about lacking empathy, remorse and screwing everyone around you over.
Not saying that I would change myself. But my personality by the majority of people is not idealized...
