Did anyone ever nickname you "Anal"?
Family Guy sure did.
by AnnabelleLeei think a lot of people who go to school for the sake of learning end up doing something completely unrelated. i know someone with a philosophy masters who is a designs clothes.
Nowhere near as unrelated as it may sound. Both require a structural, analytical mindset with a solid footing in the realm of abstract. (haven't studied philosophy but i'm no new to fashion design.)
Same goes for your sis being a chef with her philosophy MA. If it was up to me, every chef should have at least a compulsory BA in philosophy.
by XenaI'm looking into learning a trade myself (UGH. I hate that it's all I can afford now.)
You a first-generation (quasi)edumacated, by any chance?
I noticed the newer the starchy white collar, the more they turn up their noses at 'trades'.
Whereas those with academia & shyte down the lineage thru generations, we don't give much a toss for façades like that. Save that for the insecure arrivistes.
Mastering a trade is as good as it gets, but if you have to pay to learn it, then something is amiss.
Oh, there goes the thread. wooster's on about her lineage again.
I thought we'd been through this already. I don't give a rat's ass about snotty wannabe blue bloods. I've never denied the fact that I come from a hearty mix of Russian peasant stock, northern Cree, disowned Catholics, military men, and an Irish pirate if mom got our genealogy right. Wth kind of Marxist would I be if I cared about money and social status? lol.
My dad's sisters were both teachers, so no. I wasn't the first in my family to attend uni.
I agree that paying for education is definitely wrong. Tell it to my neo-con gvt. But try not to sound too Marxist in the process. Somebody might accuse you of contradicting yourself or smthg. ;)
( For those of you who missed wooster's first 3 months' worth of barbs, she's always decrying my political views as 'Marxist' when I'm actually a barely-left-of-center liberal.)

Wtf is this pointless snobbery. You don't need to read philosophy to make delicious food, anyone with some world experience can tell you that. Some of the best food I've eaten came from people who probably never heard of Plato.

Sorry to break this new romantic moment you're constructing with Xena again. Why is it amiss to pay to learn a skill? You pay for tools, you pay for materials and everything else that you need to get a job done. Why not pay for the skill itself. Teachers have been payed since ancient times. They spend time and energy to teach, don't they. Would you also want a free piano if you wanted to become a pianist?
