I hope religion never dies. Televangelism disappearing would be a crime against comedy, along with many other salvageable wells of laughter.
That's a very naive assertion. Even if Christianity loses all its "followers", the majority of people we still be religious nuts. Religion is essentially about swallowing stupid dogmas as true without thinking twice about them. Due to the Western educational system, soon the majority of the world's population will be filled to the brim with silly prejudices and will therefore be religious (according to the definition I just gave). The already powerful religions of Equality, Justice and Human Rights (as well as the soon to come Cockroach Rights and Corn Rights religions) will reign supreme in the world. Can you imagine 7 BILLION religious morons populating the entire surface of planet earth? Believe it or not, we're getting there -- if we haven't already!
The funny thing, though, is that all these "religions" are proof that Christianity is not dead, since they follow from (and are indeed only made possible by) it. But I don't wish for its death either. One should not want to impoverish the world by wiping out such a hilarious joke!
And if science replaced religion. You don't think people would feel good helping and sharing their knowledge with others?
We do it here.
Personally I have thought of become a christian pastor. I thought of what I'd do with my congregation. I decided I'd teach them all that god helps those that help themselves. That they should take care of the bodies god gave them, that he wants them to feed it the right foods so they can do his works. That they should go to the doctor when they are sick, because that's why god put them here. I'd teach them the value in science and wisdom that god has given to man.
While I don't actually believe in god, I understand the value of such concepts. How they can give people strength and hope when they feel weak. But if you could teach them that what their god wants for them is for them to help themselves. To teach them to fish instead of giving them fish. That they would be happy. I'd make a hell of a pastor. Manipulating people into happier/healthier lives and those tax right offs would be a great bonus.
The truth is I'm sure the mass's need religion and they will continue to need it for the next 50 years or so. But eventually it will fade... like all of the old religions did.

Isn't selfishness/taking care of only yourself what satanism is about? It's kinda the opposite of what my granny was into...
My point is that man has some needs that science can't fulfil. Spiritual needs. I know smart scientists who are also believers. That's why I'm not sure one can be a replacement for the other... Just look at this new age stuff that's happening these days.
But the tendency is for beliefs to get mixed between themselves, as time and distance don't isolate people the way they used to. Also, the entire ritualistic part tends to be left out, since it's kinda impractical in today's rushed life. In the old days before internet/tv etc, ceremonies and stuff used to be a special thing that people were looking forward to. They're just boring now for the young generation, who'd rather get sucked into some video game. And without rituals/canons/regular meetings a religion can't keep itself stable too well.
One religion will replace the next. Science as religion can't at this time give people a sense of 'peace or immortality.' Religion is the opiate of choice and no one can "prove" the contrary.
Since religion is not about to disappear, if one religion could be wiped from the face of the earth, I'd like to get rid of Islam.
