God is dying

I don't think it will ever become completely eradicated. It reminds me of 1984 - George Orwell, In the most oppressive situation there was still those that believed differently, Winston.

So, with that being said I think there will always be those people that believe. For many, its a necessary thing; a support even.

There will always be a belief. But whether that belief must be a diety is questionable. For many Science is the new religion. It is the new form of faith. A faith in logic and reason.

There have been many evolutions in belief systems. Starting with the worship of animals, then nature, then gods, then a single god. It has been a constant battle to find understanding in the world around us. Justifications for things that were beyond our comprehension. Science in many ways fills that void and continues to do so more every day.

The question isn't will people stop believing in gods. But when will belief in gods no longer be needed to satisfy the ignorance of the masses?

I see what you're saying. I think that depends on how we evolve as a species. How technology and science advances, maybe we will discover some groundbreaking fact?

Only time will tell, but hey! Just my opinion.

Who knows we might find out that the gods we worship are actually aliens. Some sort of extraterrestrial life that have been monitoring us as we evolve.

How much longer do you think religion has in western society?

Unfortunately religion is here to stay.

If find it reassuring that younger generations, through access to information and science, are realizing that religion is nothing but a bunch of antiquated superstitions and flat-out lies invented by some people to assert control over other people.

Even if it had its use in the past because it fulfilled our basic human need to understand the unknown ( where do we come from? what happens when we die? how was the world created? etc ) and it provided well established moral guidelines (i.e the ten commandments), we made such huge strides in our understanding of the world through science than religion is basically useless in that respect nowadays.

And yes intelligent design is bullshit.

In conclusion I will say this: since our society gave power to a secular form of politics as opposed to having religious leaders our western world has reached an age of maturity.

Just take a look at the Middle East to see how bad it gets when religion and power are intertwined.

Comparing the overall standard of living in a self-identified religious nation such as the US to self-identified secular Western European nations, I think that abandoning ancient tribal customs is in society's best interest.

Christianity has had its day, for sure, but I doubt we'll see the end of it in our lifetimes. It's still so interwoven into the structure and institutions of our society that it will probably continue to play a role long after the meaning behind it has been forgotten. It will go out with a whimper, not a bang.

I think you're forgetting that there are a lot of very stupid people in the world. Even considering advances in education and technology, there are people who will always need some form of superstition because they're not able to understand the science. Religion is black and white, science is more complicated than that.
