what are you looking for in an employer? For those who aren't 'parasiting' what are the traits/practices of your perfect boss?

Damn you must really be young to be asking this question. Common sense would tell you. That a good boss leads by example, and treats everyone equally.

I think it's a terrible idea to treat everyone equally.

Interesting points. I think it's important to treat everyone fairly as opposed to equally. People aren't the same so equal treatment would be wrong in my opinion.

But people are emotional and have biases. I personally think emotions should stay out of the workplace as much as possible, because more often than not, those are what are responsible for unequal treatment--not the differences in work ethic of the employees.

I think it's impossible to remove emotion from the workplace and it would suck if we did. Workplaces can be de-humanizing to begin with, purposely striving for that might create a stifled environment. Although I like feeding off of people's emotions or I should say, directing their emotions in a way that inspires results, if/when possible.

I hate rules - following them or enforcing them but it's interesting to hear your perspective on this. Would it bother you if a hard working coworker was consistently late?

The issue i have with jobs is that you cannot just get your head down and do your job. There is always office politics at play and you can never stay out of it.

Years ago I was a big wig for a company and ran all of purchasing, among other things.  I worked with high end companies that sell things from fragrances to leather goods. I remember the day I had to walk into my boss's office and tell him I had made a 250K mistake in items I had purchased for the stores. He looked as me and asked if I had made this type of mistake before. I said no. He asked if I learned from the mistake. I said yes. He told me to go back to my office and continue doing the job I had always done.

That is reflective of a good boss.  A good boss also knows how to delegate.  In the end I would never again work for someone else. Nothing beats working for yourself.

Yea, sounds like a good boss. But you obviously had a great track record behind you and earned his trust along the way so he could overlook the error. And you were forthcoming about it, which says a lot about you as well. Delegation is important and can be hard to do.

I think the point of the rules is a general guideline, but if breaking a rule isn't negatively affecting someone's work then I don't see why people have to get upset over it being broken. I'm talking about stupid rules like dress codes and having to start work at an exact time. The people who get mad that you are wearing an extra piercing in your ear or showed up at 9:10 instead of 9:00 are annoying to me.

I understand that if you accept a job you agree to do these stupid things, but the question was about your ideal boss.

I agree with you completely. I find it interesting that others don't. I believe in focusing on results vs rules. I don't care what time an employee comes in or leaves as long as he/she delivers results. Some people perform better at different times of the day and are faster than others. I don't care how you get things done as long as things get done. It's interesting to see how this management style offends some people who are more comfortable with rules.

As for dress code, I think people can look professional but still maintain a degree of individual identity. I could not care less about tats and piercings within reason. It's a judgement call though and how you look can impact how you're perceived.

I think I could only ever be my own boss. I struggle with authority figures and don't really follow others rules.

It must be nice to be so happy with being a shit for brains stuck up childish tool

I'm inquiring about this because I have an interview for a new job Friday and the people interviewing me are the people who would be reporting to me. I've never had an interview like this before. I think it's cool but it's off putting.

What would you want to know about a potential new boss (other than how much you can manipulate him, lol)?

keep it simple and honest and maintain eye contact with the person you are speaking to. People can smell bullshit from a mile away. First impressions are everything. Keep your head up and be confident, People will notice your posture.
