Your best boss...

For me, what I value most in a leader is someone who is acts in the best interest of the business/organization, is objective, and direct.  Directness is important to me from making business decisions to how they deal with me.  I don't necessarily expect to be treated equal "just because".  I do expect to be given direct answers.  I do expect to be told directly if you disagree with me.  I hate political correctness and bullshit hand-holding.  However, I do expect to be treated like a human (i.e. don't throw me under the bus to save your ass, or at least go down with me).

Only if I were the favorite.

I think it's a terrible idea to treat everyone equally because people aren't equal. If you have two employees, and one of them comes in late and takes long breaks but does exceptional work, and the other always comes on time and follows the rules but does mediocre work, it's fine to have different standards for both of them. You're indulging the first one by valuing his work over the rules, and you're indulging the second by forgiving his work because he's conscientious and is putting in effort.

The first one will wonder why the second still has a job when his work sucks, and the second will wonder why the first still has a job when he's always late. I think a good employer is one who knows how to balance treating people differently so that everyone feels they are being treated well.

Anyone with some age and common sense will act as such anyways. Everything you spoke of is common sense. Some things can be left unsaid. I think you just look for stuff to argue with people about. Everyone who has been in the work force for a while knows that a good boss is someone who leads by example and treats his people equally (fair)

I think I could only ever be my own boss. I struggle with authority figures and don't really follow others rules.

I think the point of the rules is a general guideline, but if breaking a rule isn't negatively affecting someone's work then I don't see why people have to get upset over it being broken. I'm talking about stupid rules like dress codes and having to start work at an exact time. The people who get mad that you are wearing an extra piercing in your ear or showed up at 9:10 instead of 9:00 are annoying to me.

I understand that if you accept a job you agree to do these stupid things, but the question was about your ideal boss.

I don't consider it to be treating everyone equally, but if you agree with what I'm saying by using words that mean the opposite to me, that's fine. It probably seems like I just look for things to argue about because I never bother to post when I agree with something unless I have something to add.

Dress codes/piercings/tattoos are in place because you are a reflection of where you work. The presentation you put on is the presentation of the company. If you look like shit - the company in turn looks a little like shit too. I got news for you. Some people don't like it when they see sketchy, unsophisticated looking people working. It's a privilege to have a job in this economy. Not a given. There's a hundred other people you would take your job and follow the rules.

Is it ok to work in an office and wear jeans? Sweatpants? No it's not. That's unprofessional.

And 10 minutes is ridiculous. If you can't show up to work on time I don't have much hope for you in the rest of work either.

I prefer a boss that I can manipulate.  I want to do the bare minimum for a paycheck and do that successfully; meaning I don't want a boss that will nag me or nitpick me for what I don't do right.  Usually, I am able to feel a boss out and find a comfort zone with them, even with those bosses that like to micromanage.  I find out their habits and work around them to suit my slack off approach.  I have yet to have a bad reputation with anyone.  My "best" boss would be a man I worked for who believed I was his friend.  In truth I had no respect for him and thought he was incompetent.  Being his friend meant getting free lunch and gifts.  It didn't take much effort.  Being in that position afforded me a lot of room to do whatever I wanted without any consequences or questions.

I don't disagree with any of this, but I was talking about my ideal boss/working environment, not the things that annoy me about most work environments. Like I said before, agreeing to a job means agreeing to follow their rules. The things I mentioned are just things I don't personally place much importance on, so my ideal boss wouldn't either. I'd rather skip 10 minutes from my lunch and accomplish the same thing than be fired for being late.  To me, that makes just as much sense.

Well done, I respect that you didn't stoop to my lvl in your return post to me. That tells me a lot. Maybe I was wrong about you.
