If you had superpowers, would you be a superhero or supervillain? Why?
Just because you have sociopathic traits does not automatically make you the villain. You still choose.
I'd try to do what I thought was best and some people would call me a hero and some people would call me a villain.
If I have to answer one or the other I'd say villain because I'd be motivated by myself rather than by self sacrifice and the villain always thinks he is justified.
I'd love to be a hero but I think the best I can hope for is being a really nice villain.

Very realistic answer. Like you were saying, one group would treat you as the hero while the other sees you as the villain.
I wouldn't "take" either the hero or villain path. Why does the sudden emergence of powers mean having to make a name for yourself, and why does what you do have to be given a "side"?
I'd just carry on my life with that newfound power, and see where that takes me. I'm pretty sure what the power is would frame my motivations more than anything.
I think some of the most terrible dictators in history were trying to "save" their countries. They probably thought they were sacrificing themselves to a greater good.
Mother Teresa was a terrible person. She denied dying people pain medication because she thought that the pain and poverty brought them closer to God, but when she was dying she was medicated in a nice hospital. And she's a saint.
I'm not sure if anyone tries to be a superhero out of pure self sacrifice...the people who do that are usually just really nice people.
