Willing to bet there's a pattern you haven't noticed yet. Complete randomness is rare.

And you find those kinds of answers a sign of him being intelligent and charming? That smile must be really distracting.

He says it in a charming way with a smile that makes me want to slap him.

 Nothing to analyze really, cause it's bullshit. Remember, that guy is always playing poker. When he says cause he wants to, that is comparible to a white lie. When he says that, just label it as obvious. Focus on becoming callous to mental abuse. As you might have noticed, this site has all kinds of pests that might be useful to you, if you want to sharpen up on not giving a damn when others make an attempt at hurting you.

I don't usually get bothered by people trying to insult me, he just does something that gets under my skin.  Sometimes he says things that sound honest ("I like hurting people") very nonchalantly, is that just another tactic for something and not actually him opening up to me?

I think it's safe to assume he's being honest when he says he likes to hurt people. He does it to you for sport it seems. All the more reason not to take him seriously when he acts up. It's fun to him. Smash a coffee mug, to him this is unpredictable and interesting. Adapt to his abuse, and you'll rule him.

 I don't think I should smash anything because he'll probably just think I'm pretty psycho, but the rest sounds like good advice.  So thank you.  I'm going to see him this weekend and I will put this into practice.

Unless it's one of those nights when he just ignores me, and then I'll probably sit there feeling bad.  If he ignores me I should just ignore him, right?  He already knows I like him so I don't have to prove it anymore.

 Caring is not the issue.  He will act as if he doesn't while wandering about thinking why you left.  But in the end, it is about losing control.  You will possess his power for a short time.  Play around with this for a while and you will understand what I mean.
