It would be a challenge to see if we could end the novel without her dying.  Or killing the priest in self defense.  I see naivety being achieved using her age.  Not too young, the whole priest-child ordeal would distract from the story. 

Maybe the epiphany doesn't "resolve" the priest in a sense.  He gains insight into using both traits to his advantage.  Turning them on and off at will.

I guess it depends on the message being sent to the reader.

Nightmares.  He definitely needs to have nightmares.

 Oh he does have nightmares.

One of his parishioners runs a rehabilitation website for the criminally insane, and Father Mislan has recurring nightmares about them breaking into his church yard and desecrating his ornate water feature. 

And I think  his 'tics" should be spitting and flapping his hand wildly.

 You should watch the second season of American Horror Story. It is somewhat similar.

 A research paper isn't just something to prove you're smart enough to pass the class. It's also a contribution to Humanity. You are putting time and the power of human thought toward an issue that the light of consciousness has yet to consider. It's a noble cause!
