If you can, level the cake by cutting off the top. (you can also make a layered cake but maybe let's save that for later)
You're gonna want to dirty ice it first that way you dont get any stray crumbs in your actual icing layer. You can start definitely start going at it with paint spatulas or cake brushes as that will give you way more control than icing tips.
I definitely think you can do it, you just gotta work with what you know and remember to cool the frosting so it's easier to work with
