Here's the thing, bringing new people to the forum is the good idea. Introducing new people to the discord, bad idea

Within the loosely psychology based discords that SC is apart of, there are very unfavorable social dynamics that go on. New people invited don't socialize with the community, they remain inactive for weeks until the person who invited them or someone they knew from another server started talking.

You'll have these self segregating groups until eventually both communities would rather be at a more exclusive discord. This is already happening with a number of SC members being less active or entirely abandoning the discord. Invite people that actually would like to socialize, get to know people and aren't in for just the latest scoop discord drama, the rest should be all good.

There are 111 members on the SC discord when there should be maybe 40-50 tops. We are actually outnumbered in a discord meant for the community. Inviting people in rapid succession is a very good way to ruin the dynamic of a community, that discord just became an extension of Asylum

I think since the forum's up and running, the Discord isn't even necessary. It's just an interesting place at this point. Again, there are restricted channels people can use if xenophobia kicks in. Otherwise, it just has a really interesting dynamic once you get to know some of the people. There are quite a few active users who are the types who would be banned almost anywhere else. Not unlike a lot of SC folks.

I don't think it's such a big deal, those discord spergs aren't the type to use a forum for their arguments anyway, so they will simply not come here.

A shadow not so dark.

Yes I was going to make a topic yesterday about this but closed chrome and gave up. The channel I believe actually discourages activity, I don't know who's idea it was but imo it was a really bad one. Nothing is really lost as it was a temp discord, but from the very start I've been against inviting anyone from the neighboring discords(they are actually that bad). I just hope this example is remembered if there is a second cyber trail of tears

What's the harm though? They'll just post a bit and then leave. It's not like SC drama is miles better than Discord drama either.

They'll never make it to the forum, like the other guy mentioned. The problem is limited to the discord and they will not leave. They simply invite their friends until it is now a server full of people I do not even know

I think Cawk and c4 proposed it? Because of the volume of new people. And it made sense to me as well. Because if we kept a restrictive membership, then we would be limiting potentially new SC members. I think if I made a mistake, it was not thinking of doing this sooner.

The idea from the beginning was to keep things restrictive and have a temporary place for the community to be, and I think it accomplished that. Now that it has, I'm not sure what I want to do with it. I want to continue to promote SC on it, by advertising it in the info channel and keeping SC laissez-faire moderation as the standard. And I think some of the users there are overlooked by the SC community. Like Volky, Adolf, Ephemeral, touk, Bruce Leto, Scorp, larry, raj. And some new folks that I've known from way back like Dakota and Eric.

I get that these people are from "elsewhere" and that has a type of baggage, but these people are on a similar wavelength to what this community has been on. This is what happened with PF, when the AsPD subforum got locked down. A bunch of people from PF came to SC (myself included) and at first there was an autistic pissing contest between communities. After that settled, you had me (for better or worse), wooter, Macaria, Pink, wahoo, and so on.

It's easier to incorporate people into a forum than a discord. It's harder to not participate and there's more incentive to when threads are being bumped. Discord, if the people you know aren't talking, you just come back in 15 minutes like nothing happened

The transition for PF'ers to SC wasn't bad

Let's play a game though, count the SC members, screenshot taken now lol

Yeah, it's a minority. But it's an open Discord. There can be a closed one if someone prefers that. But why, if we already have a site now?

the idea was never for it to be an open discord and no one supported it being an open discord
