Don't know much about PokemonGO, if they add new content to it or what, but I'm seeing it's been out for 10 years. now.
It's nice how games can give us a sense of accomplishment.
As a lore dump the game recently had some sort of anniversary meetup for the ones who are still on board even this far along, and the tech was basically a glorified trick to get people to help build upon and train GPS.

Says here the game garners 34 million active users and generates 45-60 million in monthly revenue.
When the game dies, they'll shut it down, but it's not going anywhere anytime soon from the looks of it.

People may still play it without posting about it or participating in the same social-media culture that surrounded it at its peak. Reduced spectacle is not the same as disappearance. Is that why you think people have been "giving up?" Because you miss 2016 Youtube?
