This is the second time he's been president, they don't lose interest they take breathers. 

His platform is built on being a critic, he needs something to criticize so that it doesn't end up cannibalizing (further). 

What happens after this?  What will be the new normal?  Will things need to be ramped up or will they settle down?  It's hard to say what it's going to take to break the spell over American politics, where they are able to define themselves in terms of their own organization than reacting to that of their opposition.

It is hard to say what sobering up is going to look like.  It's easy enough to imagine either side falling back on blaming the other.  The way things are now, I would never expect contrition on the part of either party; division is too heated.  I think things are still a lot of "wait-and-see"-ism.  Early prospects look terrible, the trend doesn't seem optimistic -- to vastly understate the situation.  Any denial of this on the part of those from Trumpistan would be more of a deflection: it's a little early to get swayed by consequences that haven't happened yet.  Clearly, Trump is capable of upsetting a lot of people.  What better way to upset them than to succeed, though?

...But then after his term, after the damage has truly been done, it will be the same story where the consequences of one administration actually befall their successors worse.  All the mistakes being made have accumulated for those coming after.  It might be telling how quickly things go to shit before that administration change, to say just how bad things are.
