It's crazy that The Right can try to silence it by changing how the word itself is taken, rather than addressing their arguments, and it makes me feel bad everytime I see it culturally appropriated that way, Whitewashing it.
Overtime Activism itself is shut down by these kinds of strategies, even you are taking it to mean "denying reality" via clown world as someone more neutrally inclined rather than to mean keeping a cause alive, which for trying to amass a group contributes to making it that much harder for people to mobilize. It's effectively an indirect form of attack by those who intended to change how the word is perceived.
Being "Woke" just means refusing to be silent over perceived issues, and is how Kanye West could be called Woke. I know it's cringy to appeal to 1984 when making a point, but it's similar to their argument over the impact on society when you change the meaning of words. By having "woke" taken as an extreme movement it undermines the entire point of their activism, making the activism itself take on the qualities of their mutated word after the fact rather than using it for it's intended purpose.
By the old definition there are Woke Right Wingers, but bring that up and they take it to mean the appropriated definition rather than the correct one. At this point if The Left found a new word for it it'd become the same thing, showing that, even over potentially activism-neutral phrasing, that it's actually about undermining progressive activism as a whole in a multifaceted way. Even when bringing up wealth disparity and non-clown issues now people will automatically take in as "WOKE", it's now being used to shut down pretty much anything by lumping it altogether instead of addressing issues individually, to the point of it shifting voting demographics.
People can't speak their truth if their words used lose value as they're said, and once they're silenced perceived problems become perceived norms.

Pretty interesting how clearly left-of-center, atheist, anti-Trump antagonist Sam Harris feels similarly about the role that "wokeness" played in the swing of this election. (Although, to be fair, he's been against a lot of the extremist identity politics and far-left agenda, and quite vocal about that, for a while already.)

I'd disagree, over intelligence not being a requirement and over empathy merely being appealed to by the concept.
I still find it crazy that right wing political agendas managed to radically change how a word is perceived to the point of killing it. There is nothing stopping people from taking a word used in a meaningful discourse and converting it into something gross, changing the meaning of said discourse after the fact. Thanks to the right, to enough people now Wokeness = Clown World when really it's more about having a Megaphone. For fucks sake, RFK Jr. technically falls under the umbrella term of 'Woke' when you harken back to it's actual meaning, as being anti-vax in itself is inherently 'Woke'.
Rather than it being about the choice of words from the author, it's become about how critics can change what those words mean after the message was already said in it's intended way, mutating the meaning in post. It's like how saying "smoking a fag makes me feel gay" means something entirely different now within modern context once the word "Gay" stopped meaning "Happy" and the word "Fag" stopped meaning "Cigarette".
It'd be like changing the word "Peace" to mean "Submission", then reading old speeches and listening to old music within the new context.
