They only were that popular from riding on the coattails of the originals' successes. Without the anime and the original games no one would have touched it.
Imagine for another example if Kingdom Hearts came out, but no one knew what Squaresoft or Disney was. That’s completely irrelevant to the fact that this is the most successful Pokémon game.
It really isn't, but I guess I shouldn't expect you to get it when you've clearly never played them.
Pokemon Go is by design meant to cost you money the longer you play it, compared to the originals which only sold as individual units. As a business decision yes, it has made more money by using the Cash Whale model over a mobile platform, but when you consider how much money the games that don't charge you more the longer you play have made, it becomes clear which game was more successful.
How much money do you figure the average player spends to continue playing Pokemon Go compared to how much people spend on the original's cartridges? The financial success of Pokemon Go is moreso a matter of the medium, not it's quality.
That being said, the gameplay is clearly superior in the original, and the only reason Niantic didn't use it is over Gamefreak owning the rights to the superior model while being completely unwilling to part with it. If there was a version of Pokemon Go made by Gamefreak to oppose Niantic's half-assed version, or if Niantic tried to make a version for the Gameboy instead, it's obvious which one would be the winner. It’s like saying final fantasy VII was only successful because of the previous games
It's more like saying Final Fantasy VIII was only successful because of the success of Final Fantasy VII. A lot of what had FFVII skyrocket in popularity was moreover it being the first Squaresoft RPG to come out for the PS1, a wildly popular console system when compared to it's predecessors they made for Nintendo.
This also is before factoring in how Squaresoft's marketing in the US was weaker before, their imports weren't exactly well managed before they moved over to Sony. They even mislabeled Final Fantasy VI as Final Fantasy III.It’s not the 1st in the series, that doesn’t mean shit. Pokémon Go is THE MOST DOWNLOADED MOBILE GAME.
Well yeah, Pokemon is the richest franchise on the globe and mobile games offer increased availability. This is irrelevant over how the originals aren't on the Mobile platform.
Launching 20 years after the originals. Sure the other games had an impact on this games success, but who cares?
It does make a statement for how great they were, as it was those who played them that then moved onto trying Pokemon Go. You and Med are probably the only people I've met who play Pokemon Go without exposure to the superior product.
If the original Pokemon games weren't successful, Pokemon wouldn't have become the richest franchise on the planet, and with it there would not have been people downloading the mobile game in the first place, they'd probably be doing Digimon or Monster Rancher instead. It was not Pokemon Go that started PokeMania, it was the original cartridges.
I actually had all 150 Pokémon in red version before the mew glitch was discovered and invested literally ~2000 hours into red and yellow. The success of the 1st games is marginally relevant to how successful Pokémon Go is 7 years after release, but it’s not really worth noting. It also isn’t plagued by glitches that literally everybody took advantage of to make a fairly difficult game too easy. It also doesn’t suffer from the main games problem that there is no way to beat this game and it just goes on. Most of the main games kinda become boring after you defeat the elite 4 (especially if you have nobody to trade with and don’t want every cartridge) which generally isn’t even that difficult. There will kinda always be more to do in Pokémon Go.
