Which do you think will happen first: discover extraterrestrial alien life or develop sentient AI?  Perhaps life on this planet is extraterrestrial in origin, or its development has been.  The whole biological program was in order to get that AI online.

AI, definitely, and they will be smart enough to cut broadcasting any signals.

They're on the moon, mars, and everywhere. Dark side of the moon is an alien AI base.

If you've ever played mass effect, you know what's up. Now the only thing we need to do is convince chatGPT to protect all the meatbags.

I used to think AI self-consciousness was far away. However, now with all of the AI explosion these days, I'm starting to think we're not that far away from the "AI singularity". One of my friends used to chat about that 15 years ago, and everyone just dismissed him, including me. Now,  I'm not so sure. It sounds pretty plausible.

I used to wonder which of these Big Three would be the next game-changer: aliens, AI, life after death.  The race for AI sentience is a believable possibility more than the others, now.

However, AI emergence is not too far off from also meeting our first alien race.  AI would have had the advantage of "growing up" around humanity.  Once it really is able to explore its own nature (or our joint natures), we might be headed to transhumanism or something.

Much will probably change in our perception of what an alien could be and how well sentience itself is a commiserate trait.

L = the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space

Maybe the communicable civilizations learned, before we developed the tech, that they should not be sending alarms out into the ethos to notify of their location. War, colonization, and disease could be the consequences of transgalactic contact.

But that would mean we're headed for an imminent disaster.

Using earth as an example, when as a more technologically advice civilization making contact for a less technologically advanced civilization ever worked out for the less advanced civilization?

We are native Americans sending because for Europeans to come wipe us out.

depends, what are the criteria for "sentient" in this context?

Yeah, the problem comes about with the enormous amount of time of the universe and the small spec of time for the human existence. I believe we are alone.

Well, to save from derailing the topic, suffice to say "sentience" is synonymous with "consciousness".  Self-awareness, subjectivity, self-motivated purpose-seeking, etc.

At least for us, technological advance seems to become exponential. I don't know the math term for the graphed line: A logarithm? Think of human progress over the last 100 years. When such a race that could monitor us exists, would they feel the need to interfere with the races they run into, while they're quantum teleporting around or whatever? And to what extent do we project primate behavior onto something that isn't even from Earth?
