As for Elon. His smear campaign started when he first offered to buy twitter, so of course CNN will send the NPC's.

It started way before then, where have you been?

 I'm referring to MSM.

Nice recent vid on the topic TSMC coming to the U.S.

Another interesting industry that takes much more than just money is jet engine manufacturing, specifically for Military use.

Chinese engines, despite the Chinese having stolen designs and Russian examples, still lag the U.S. and Russia and engine design and manufacturing by a long ways. the WS-10 which is Chinas most advanced mass produced engine cannot match the thrust of a F110 (F16) or AF-31 (Su27).

It takes decades to build up the expertise in the materials metallurgy and manufacturing to successfully mass produce advanced propulsion systems like the F119 (F22) or F135( F35). Effectively, the Chinese are still learning how to master engine manufacturing its competitors master in the 1980's.

The J20 and J31 may look like 6th gen fighter aircraft but they are insanely under powered and that's really bad given a air war energy is everything.

The gist that I get from the video is that TSMC is doing a plant in America, but they aren't using their most advanced production techniques there, nor are they investing more than you would think for a new plant. What do you think about the US basically outsourcing this part of the production process to Taiwan?

I've seen all kinds of silly stuff about Chinese engineering, there are videos of satellite launches that go wrong and crash into villages or somewhere random. I don't think China is a military threat, but I do believe their AI development and hacking capabilities are things to worry about.

Biden said he would go to war for Taiwan.

He would not make that promise for Ukraine, so yeah. They probably do have a deal in the works with Taiwan.

 US military is in recovery.

Putin's invasion is calculated, hence he made his move when the US got dunked on, plus Biden's more focused on selling off the US.

Without world hunger, who's going to save the starving kids?

It made sense at one point. Given the competitive environment of the 90s and the shifted policy stance of the US which changed the investment conditions in the American semiconductor industry its hard to see the US being the only big player. You also had the death of the Soviet Union and Americas continued commitment to being the world guarenteer of free maritime trade. It makes sense you cut looses at home (while shifting R&D elsewhere), invest heavily in the other big semiconductor players, and as the only large scale blue water navy guarantee the security of the supply chains. Recall China and Russia were not a threat at that point and we were playing a similar investment strategy with them.

It also makes sense now that we shift things to be made in house again. We have a smaller navy so we cant secure everyone elses supply chains but we can secure our and anyone elses we care about. Russia and China are both regional threats to certain interests and can throw their wait around. That implies a necessary shift in policy and that’s exactly what the US is doing.

We are getting one generation behind and by the time production goes online probably 2 gens. That is still good enough to produce chips for a lot if sophisticated computers used for a wide range of advanced purposes in manufacturing and industry in general. Further, once that fab site is online we have the ability to upgrade it to top tier chips in a year or so if need be. That’s the power of establishing that infrastructure, technology transfer, and human capital.

Some things that only exist as a result of a “bet”

Saw this today on the physicist Feynman and Nanotechnology

and it informs  Alice’s post on the microchip
