This Ukraine-joining-NATO business is overstated, Russia had already ensured that wouldn't happen in the forseeable future.

One of the explicit NATO ascension criteria is the ability to control your own borders, which Russia nixed when they annexed Crimea 8 years ago. Which is exactly why they annexed Crimea, that was enough to prevent Ukraine joining.

Also... what fucking better advertisement for NATO membership than this shit show?

Putin is basically signalling to all non-NATO members that the world will throw you under the bus if you aren't a member. He's done more for NATO recruitment in 3 days than anyone managed in the past 70 fucking years.

The argument that invading Ukraine is a reaction to Russian security concerns is a bit batshit, tbh. I bet every allied nuke in the world is trained on Moscow right now. I'd call that a massive fucking own-goal, if you were trying to minimize security concerns lol

My current theory is that his cheese done slid off its cracker. None of this adds up to sanity. I think he's on a murder-suicide mission.

I agree with the murder suicide mission. He’s crazy and I like it. We are all going down or he’s getting his way. That’s sexy af. My love for Russians is at an all time high. Can’t wait for Jesus to come back. Go Putin! Go!

Putin said there were promises to not expand NATO to the East. Is that true?

It's impossible to tell. There is no evidence of any promise, so the claim falls under the "prove there is no God" category. The burden of proof is on Russia. But IMHO, it does not matter.

The story goes that Gorbachev said Nato can not expand and someone orally promised to him "yes" in a meeting without writing it down. Somehow, this was never discussed in any of the thousands of meetings afterwards, but then resurfaced much later as a new narrative that didn't exist during Gorbachev's time (weird, huh?). If this story was true, then it would stand to reason that past interviews with Gorbachev et al. would follow the same narrative. But they don't. The past narrative was different from the current one.

RT, which is the Russian propaganda news for the West, cites German documents that discussed not expanding NATO eastward. The problem is that the document talks about moving non-German NATO to East Germany. it says nothing at all about NATO expansion. It's abundantly clear from the document if you read all of it, but RT is basically taking a few quotes from it out of context. Putin has admitted that there exist no document or agreement or anything written down about any such promise.

But IMHO it doesn't matter. I think there is some basis for the claim that NATO threatens Russian security, so they can rightfully be worried (and vice-versa, that Russia threatens the security of many Eastern European nations). However, the problem is that one could also use this NATO narrative as a pretext to attack a nation. Putin made it pretty clear in his announcement that he's not attacking Ukraine just because of NATO. He's sending freedom bombs there to help the rightful Russian-loving Ukrainians regain power from a neo-nazi puppet government.

I listened to the entire announcement by Putin, because I was expecting him to explain why NATO is a problem, but instead I get a story about their "historical lands," Ukrainian and Russian people being oppressed by neo-nazis, and puppet governments. He could've said "do not join NATO, and we stop."

It may be true that the West influenced the formation of the current government in Ukraine, I don't know. If you'd like to find something to understand Russia's views, that might be one place to start. However, influencing a country and bombing it are two very different things. It is quite true that the current Ukrainian government is pretty anti-Russia.

Basically, Ukraine is a playground for the West and Russia to take turns inserting puppet governments there, so now the Ukrainian people need to pay in blood. It's always like this. Whatever the case, the current Ukrainian people do not want Russia there. No matter what the history is, there are real people there with real lives and their own values. You can't just go to a country and fuck it up against the people's wills. West can't do that with their propaganda. Nor can Russia with their bombs.

If history gives Russia the right to bomb Ukraine, it gives Mongolia the right to bomb Russia. What matters is who currently reside in the country and what their values are. The Ukrainian people are not oppressed by neo-nazis. Let them make their own choices. If Russia wants to help, they should mediate their transition, not bomb them and insert their own government there lol.

I think Putin is pointing to the Minsk Agreement where the Russian region is a free State.

Can’t argue with that. That’s the first thing about me that you’ve written that actually has merit. But part of it is that I want Jesus to come back in my lifetime, so stuff has to happen and this is the beginning of the end, hopefully. If not, at least we know who the most dominant man in the world is.

I like dominant men.

I tend to like submissive women, too, but I still don't admire women who choose to be punching bags for their partners.

Donetsk and Luhansk you mean? Yeah, I had to look that up. In the Minsk agreement Russia's interpretation effectively grants Russia veto power in the government. If Ukraine can't make its own independent decisions, it is not an independent country. Russia has, in the past, had a very flexible way of interpreting promises and signed contracts. They claimed they would not invade Ukraine and were just performing a large joint military drill close to Ukraine's border before all this started. Most countries close to the Russian border have trust issues with Russia, and this new development is not helping.

I think Putin still could've said "promise no NATO, and we're good." But he didn't. New puppet government installations coming to Ukraine's towns very soon, I wager.

He has decided no one listens, so:
