It already does that for me?
Indeed it does.
If you scroll over the avi from the right the username pops up after you reach the center, if you scroll over it from the left the username pops-up immediately.

I was going to suggest that, but before I posted I went and checked it out, turns out we already have that feature.
Maybe a way to access chat history?
Yeah... refreshing has some comedy gold vanish. TFI mentioned ways to access old chat as a possibility (and even a search for it, which I love but didn't think was practical to pull off), and I would love having something like that myself as well.
